Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only quite light, generally fine and reasonably faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. This scarce mono record looks little played.

Cat Number: LRZ 1005.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 150 grams. A real heavyweight pressing.

Rarity: Scarce: and even harder to find a mono copy little played and offering superb sound. The cover is equally difficult and the lyric insert sheet elusive. This copy ticks most of the positive boxes and will not prove easy to find much better.

Brief Info: Formed in 1967 by singer/guitarist Marc Bolan, Tyrannosaurus Rex was originally envisioned as an electric sextet until a hire purchase company repossessed their equipment. Bolan was joined by percussionist Steve ‘Peregrine’ Took in an acoustic-based venture that combined his love of classic rock n roll with an affection for faerie mythology. Fans of this legend will know of his unusual quivering vocal style which often rendered his lyrics incomprehensible, but the effect was captivating and enchanting and the duo were adopted by John Peel, at the time an underground ‘progressive’ music specialist. Peel tirelessly promoted the group and they had three minor hit singles. This album is scarce and mono copies are elusive in fine condition. The content of the album was somewhat intolerant of heavy tracking and thick mono stylus. This copy looks and plays superbly, without doubt modestly played by the one and only original owner. The very intolerant format cover has also faired well with far less wear than many seen and lastly, the original lyric insert is included and practically Mint as made. For fans of this legendary artist, this is a very impressive copy.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single unlaminated format with deep texturing on the front the back panel smooth. The back has three external flipbacks making it extremely fragile and being so dark, prone to just about everything possible. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and has the ‘Patents Pending’ text. Includes the original lyric insert sheet.

Cover Front: Apart from the usual rubbing on the edges and corners, there is little else on this front that is seldom seen this fine. The texturing is heavy and pronounced, a bit like an oil canvas, it retains deep rich colour and the only rubbing of small note on the bottom corner tips. There is some surface creasing mostly near the bottom left corner area but the lack of ring wear, rubbing and wear are all major positives. A little trace of speckle on the raised areas, but in terms of this, almost minuscule and this sets a high standard.

Cover Back: The main panel is superb with barely any rubbong and no ring wear. Any creasing here very fine, light and few. Three flipbacks here and all are solid and undamaged. Even the ends are unscuffed or thickened, any rubbing very slight indeed. The corners have rubbed and few will ever not be.

Top Edges: Patchy rubbing, mostly nearer the end areas. Around 80 to 85 per cent ink is retained.

Bottom Edges: Patchy rubbing again and similar to above but more like 60 to 65 per cent retention.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring mild on such a cover, this is guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight with only modest compression in places. The really important factor is the ALL the text is present and practically unworn. This VERY unusual indeed and most welcome. I have seen this spine totally threadbare before and rarely with all the text as solid and present. Any rubbing to the deep brown ink minimal, light and faint.

Corners: All have moderate rubbing, but in terms of this one, probably less than average. All retain fine to very fine shape.

Cover Summary: An extremely difficult cover for all the obvious reasons, and being honest, this is somewhat above average. Still a strong all-round example and it will prove very difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many collectors but not the perfectionists.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a plain white unlined inner that has only modestly aged with a little darkening near the edges. Some neat corner creasing, two crisp window circles and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

The Lyric Insert Sheet: MINT(-): a super example or this elusive insert. Printed both sides, this is clean, fresh and barely creased. No folds, grubbiness and all edges crisp and solid. This is guaranteed original and will prove beyond difficult to find better. I have never seen a better one of these.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, light and faint. This grading does not do a 1968 mono record full justice and a (+) would not be out-of-place. No heavy-tracking worn mono stylus have ruined this hugely impressive record. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This early Bolan classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or significant clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Acoustic music and vocals – some unaccompanied, that are all precise, focused and sharp and offer the perfect sound for time. Remember, mono records were not really designed to be played on modern clinical stereo equipment, but when they sound this good, they are things to treasure. A copy more than up to the job and devoid of that unwanted wear and noise so many have. Only the lighest and little-used copies have any chance, but the fact-of-the-matter is, those who bought this record when issued, tended to play it substantially and a record like this is very much exception to the rule. Few copies will match or outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. A one-owner-from-new copy, played on a quality record player and I doubt it this has seen light-of-day for decades. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This all-round copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
