This means this specific copy was pressed by the Columbia Records Pressing Plant in Pitman, New Jersey.
Because this is a double album, Columbia Records assigned two distinct catalog numbers to the individual discs so the factory could keep them organized:
-
Disc 1 (Sides A and B) is assigned 35070.
-
Disc 2 (Sides C and D) is assigned 35071.
These letters were internal tracking codes for Epic Records (a subsidiary of Columbia):
-
P: Indicates the prefix pricing tier for Columbia/Epic premium releases in the late 1970s.
-
A: Indicates a Side 1 (Side A or C) master.
-
B: Indicates a Side 2 (Side B or D) master.
-1A (Sides A, C, and D): This signifies the absolute first production run of lacquers cut for those sides. Collectors highly prize "1A" pressings because they are closest to the original master tape, meaning the sound is as crisp and powerful as possible.
-1D (Side B): This means the original 1A, 1B, and 1C lacquer plates for Side B either wore out from pressing so many copies or suffered a defect during manufacturing. The engineer had to cut a fourth plate (D) from that first tape reel to keep the factory machines running.
- It is completely normal to have -1A on three sides and -1D on another. In the 1970s, factory workers grabbed whatever metal stampers were ready on the assembly line. Your copy proves that Epic was pressing thousands of these records around the clock to keep up with Ted Nugent's peak popularity in 1978!
I have my vinyl record albums listed for sale in my store. These vinyl records were included in David Gahr's entire sold off collection of photo negatives. They are early releases of albums that have his photography images somewhere on the album jacket and he was given copies.
On the original 1978 release of Ted Nugent's Double Live Gonzo!, David Gahr is credited as the sole photographer for the album. Instead of taking just a few select shots, Gahr captured the entire main visual package for the original double LP. His work includes:
-
The Front Cover: The iconic shot of a shirtless, sweat-drenched Ted Nugent onstage roaring into the microphone while shredding on his Gibson Byrdland guitar.
-
The Gatefold & Inner Sleeves: The candid, high-energy live performance and backstage photos featured throughout the original packaging.
