EBAY: The Suns were reissued in the early 1970’s, and were identical to the originals, except there are no press marks, and on some pressings the sun rays on the label do not extend all the way to the middle hole. These did not have “re” or “reissue” engrave in the trail-off. This version is known to some collectors as the “jukebox” version. The method of distinguishing 1950’s Suns from these 1970’s Suns is to look at the last two digits of the serial number in the trail-off - the 72 on the first four Suns, the 20 on the fifth. On the originals, the last two digits are approximately ½ inch from the other digits. On the 1972 Suns, the distance is doubled, to just over an inch. This is the most important factor in distinguishing original Sun records, NOT press marks. Also, you need to look at the color of the label. The originals are a deep yellow with dark brown printing; most counterfeit versions have lighter or softer yellow labels with light brown or black printing. The early 70’s also saw a set of Suns issued in Europe, but they are RCA European pressings, with RCA numbers stamped in the trail-off and Sun labels applied. Further, two bootleg issues came out at about the same time, one replacing the last two digits with RE (for RE-issue), and a 1973 issue that has Issued 1973 in script in the trail-off.There are also five known “colored vinyl” issues, easily identified by their color - a red set, a blue set, a yellow or gold set, a set with each record a different color, and a multicolored set. In 1998, a new set was issued in Europe, in a box, with each record in a faux Sun sleeve. Record #209, “That’s All Right”, has SUN 209A -1998 and SUN 209B -1998 on the two sides. The other four have the SUN and record numbers and the A or B, but no date. The printing on the labels have been reduced in size presumably to try to get the sun rays to meet the hole.

I have seen a gold plated set as well. I believe these to be RCA release that have Sun labels applied and been sprayed with gold paint.
A final note on authenticating, beware of relying on the press marks. There have been some of the “jukebox” releases that have had artificial marks applied. They look very convincing. You should rely on the spacing in the trail-off for distinction.
