"1962-1966 Red Discs" DCM: direct metal master 1C 172-05 307/08
This item is a very rare German-import pressing of The Beatles’ 1962-1966 2-LP set, originally released on Apple Records in 1973. This particular pressing is rare, however, for two reasons: first, it is pressed on blue vinyl; and second, it is a DMM audiophile pressing. DMM stands for “Direct Metal Mastering”, a process whereby the groove is cut directly into copper metal, so that transient response is greatly improved. Stampers are then plated directly from the DMM copper master, eliminating two of the three plating steps required for pressing lacquers. In short, DMM yields better detail resolution and a lower noise ratio than the traditional LP pressing method.
The edges have slight wear that I have photographed.
The back story to this collectors item is way back when out of high school I worked at Wall to Wall Sound and Video for a while and then Sound Odyssey record stores. This was back East and I spent most of my pay checks buying inventory. Later when CBS Records in Pitman, New Jersey sold out to Sony I worked at that Compact Disc Plant and Vinyl began to die as did most of the record stores [Vinyl]. Then Virgin Mega-Stores began to dot the landscape and we all discovered that CDs don't have the depth vinyl has. Thank God history repeats itself and Vinyl is making a sizable come-back.
