Introducing The Beatles

We have up for auction an authentic pressing of The Beatles Introducing The Beatles Vee Jay VJLP 1062 Mono which was released on February 12, 1964. This desirable label type is the Black Label with Color Band--Brackets Logo. This copy meets every criteria for being a genuine LP and jacket for this title, as “Introducing the Beatles” is probably one of the most counterfeited LP in music recording history. According to Perry Cox’ Official Price Guide 1999, this LP in NM condition was valued at $175.00, and that was without the jacket, which was credited as being worth $175.00. Our copy includes “Please Please Me” and “Ask Me Why”. Song titles are in two columns on the back of the jacket. As with all of our LPs, we play-tested it prior to listing it on eBay.

Play-Grade: The LP possesses a startling clarity which Vee-Jay was known for and our pressing surely delivered what a listener of early Beatles music craves for, which is a clear, loud, punchy mono experience with just at minimal of background noise one could hope for in an LP which is closing in on being 46 years old. There is low mild crackling between songs and during quieter parts of particular pieces, such as “Misery“. For some reason, I’ve always enjoyed the Vee-Jay recordings more than the Capitol Records ones. Perhaps it is that rawness that The Beatles brought to these very early sessions and was somewhat watered down in subsequent pressings and production. This LP grades as a VG+ utilizing the Goldmine Grading System.

Visual Grade: This was a well-cared for LP and the vinyl is glossy with a shine which has not dissipated over the past 45 years. There are a few hairlines, but nothing that would detract from the appearance of this heavy-weight vinyl. This is a true VG+ specimen on both sides, and despite a couple of superficial lines and one or two scruff marks, this is a magnificent LP to look at. Due to the high gloss, one can easily see the date of pressing--2/12/64, in the matrix area, which automatically authenticates the LP, and the letters, “URJ” and “ARC” give us the vital information needed to locate the area in which the album was actually made. This pressing was manufactured by The Allentown Record Company.

Labels: Both of the VJ Bracket labels have withstood the test of time extremely well. The rainbow colors remain vibrant and full and the silver print is sharp and clear. On Side 2, there are two small, faint “S”’s written on the perimeter of the label but it isn’t a distraction in our opinion. On Side 1, there is heavier writing, meaning a name “Dan Shubert” which has faded, but is still there. These labels would receive a VG++ grade had it not been for these demarcations. The song titles are left-justified with a medium font. The word “LONG PLAYING” is actually divided, making it two words and “MICROGROOVE” are in smaller font than the “VJLP 1062” and is the same size as the song titles. Of course, the title of the LP and “The Beatles” are above the spindle hole, which is yet another sign of authenticity. Grade: VG+

Jacket: The jacket is, once again, another sign of the item being genuine, for George Harrison’s shadow appears on the extreme right of the front-side. The jacket does present with moderate wear, particularly the bottom rim which sustained a full seam split which was repaired by tape. It wasn’t repaired by me, but I can honestly say that the person who did this work, did one heck of a good job. The rest of the jacket is intact, there is no damage at all to the spine, and the title of the LP as well as the record company’s name are easily read. There is moderate ring-wear to the front of the cover and a name is written in the upper right-hand corner. The reverse side of the jacket is still white although there is some rubbing and foxing apparent. Here is a ¾ inch pinkish line below the song listing, “Twist and Shout”, but there are no further areas of writing. Mild wear to the corners is present but nothing compared to other jackets of this title that I have seen. I have given the jacket a VG due to the complete, but repaired bottom rim and the presence of writing on the front side of the cover.

Unfortunately, the original inner sleeve was not with the LP when I acquired it, but I have replaced it with a polyethylene lined plain white jacket so that the LP can be protected.

The LP was play-tested today on our Denon DP-30LII turntable with an ADC PSX-30 stylus.

All of our LPs are professionally packaged in brand new top of the line record mailers, using cardboard stiffeners when we separate the LP from their jackets. Each vinyl and each jacket is placed in a polyurethane record sleeve to further ensure that your LP arrives in the same exact shape that it left in.
