We have up for auction the first pressing of The Beatles Meet The Beatles Capitol Records T 2047 which was released in 1964. This is the extremely rare variation which omits the BMI and ASCAP publishing credits that appear on all subsequent versions of this title. It has been estimated by many Beatles “experts” that less than 60 of these copies exist world-wide, which is a figure I personally find dubious as I own 3 Mono and 2 Stereo variations of the LP. Nevertheless, near mint (NM) mono copies of the “No BMI/ASCAP” pressings fetch nearly $1400.00 in high-end Record Stores whilst the rarer Stereo copies have been sold for as much as $4500.00!

Meet The Beatles has been re-issued more times than any other Beatles LP, but only once without publishing credits. This album is an East Coast Scranton, PA. pressing which features the RIAA number 3 on the lower right-hand corner of the jacket’s reverse side. The jacket is in VG+ condition due only to the reverse left corner showing some discoloration (see photo) and “balding” on the top right corner when viewing the front of the cover. The font side is in excellent condition with no signs of ring wear whatsoever. The jacket is strong, sturdy, free of writing, and there are no paper tears on the spine as well as the top and bottom rims. There are no seam splits anywhere.

Visually speaking, the vinyl on both sides is punctuated with a myriad of hairlines, scruffs, and scratch-marks which cannot be felt by one’s fingertips. For the collector who values high gloss and sheen, this is definitely not the vinyl for you. Conversely, a collector who wants a solid “player” or even a “filler” copy until they have enough money to buy a NM copy to store away for future generations, this pressing will be well worth the expense. There is a significant lack of that luster that appears on the $900.00 vinyls of this variation, and there is no lack of the lines that virtually make the LP APPEAR to be unplayable. For this reason, this pressing earns a VG minus.

Both labels are moderately worn which is vividly shown in our photos. The “rainbow” on the perimeter is quite faded and the labels, while not showing the heavy amount of “spidering” caused by old turntable needles just running off into the spindle areas, do exhibit a look of dullness. We think that this was caused by a prior owner trying to rub the labels clean and, instead, rubbed away the sheen that a NM Capitol label presents. In addition, the LP was not well-cared for at all and may have been left out in the sun during an early 1960s beach party! The actual spindle hole shows that this pressing must have seen hours upon hours of play, since the holes appear to be wider than those of a normally played album. Nevertheless, the silver print of the song titles is quite legible, the labels are free of pen, marker, names, etc. G+ is the grade.

Why is this LP up for auction? As a wise woman once told me, never judge a record by its cover, and this is one of those rare examples of an LP which plays well enough to earn a VG play-grade. Unlike other record collectors, I am someone who presents an LP to a world-wide audience who can decide for themselves if they want to invest a percentage of what they would have to spend on the same title in like new condition. This was my first no BMI/ASCAP LP that I purchased off of eBay by an unscrupulous dealer who knowingly misrepresented the condition and appearance of the LP, saying it was a VG+ set. Unfortunately, I spent hard-earned money which represented the cost of a VG+ copy of a first variation Meet The Beatles, but received a lessor copy.

I was somewhat relieved that there were no skips, no loud pops, no skating of the stylus from beginning to end, no sticking, and that the sound was loud, punchy, and, above all, musically sound, even during quieter songs like “Till There Was You” and “This Boy”. that the “crackling”, which I deem mild to moderate, was not even a distraction. I suppose that the iconic music of The Beatles, specifically on this title, was what mattered to me as well as the label variation, which, at that time, were auctioned off at very, very high prices.

The LP was play-tested today and the mono sound played crisply on my Denon DP-30LII turntable with and ADC PSX-30 stylus.

All of our LPs are professionally packaged in brand new top of the line record mailers, using cardboard stiffeners when we separate the LP from their jackets. Each vinyl and each jacket is placed in a polyurethane record sleeve to further ensure that your LP arrives in the same exact shape that it left in.
