Please Please Me
A First Pressing of Their First Album!
This is where it all started - 1963 saw the release of Please Please Me on the Parlophone label. Shortly after it was introduced, the label style was changed to black and yellow instead of black and gold, but this is the original first pressing style!
The Rare Record Price Guide 2006 lists this as valued at £750 for a Near Mint copy - unfortunately this copy isn't near mint (hence the much lower starting price!)
First off, the bad news. The sleeve has indeed seen better days and is torn along the bottom flipback It's also had something stuck to it at some point and there's thick gum residue on the back. The spine also has wear around the title, and has come apart slightly.
The inner sleeve also has an inch tear from the centre, and is split slightly on one side.
The record itself (the most important bit) has a number of surface scratches, and the labels are a little darker than when they were new. Side 2 has spindle wear, so obviously side 1 was the preferred side of the original owner!
Now on to the good news!
For starters, everything is original. The sleeve, the inner sleeve and the record are all genuine first pressing goods. That means the inner sleeve has the correct "Use Emitex" slogan.
The sleeve itself is damaged as mentioned above, but all the damage is on the back. Apart from a small 1/2 inch tear at the far bottom right at the seam, and the rounding of the corners, the sleeve is a good presentable copy, and looks great on display.
The record (still the most important bit) plays through well - I played it through this morning (on a Linn Axis turntable with a Goldring 1042 stylus tracking at 1.75g) to check and it did play without sticking or jumping. The sound quality is very good except for background crackle and some distortion on the loud parts, particularly at the end of side 2 as is normal on this issue ("Twist and Shout" being a loud track, so liable to most distortion. I've yet to hear this track not distorted so I suspect it was recorded a bit like that!) Side 1 has much less spindle wear than side 2. For the most part it's very listenable.
Anyone wanting a sound sample of the disc please email me with which track they'd like a sample of and I'll be happy to provide (.mp3 or ogg vorbis). Equally, any more photos on request, and of course any questions please ask.
Good luck to all wanting this piece of Beatles history! Check my other auctions for a 3rd pressing in mono (that's the first black and yellow pressing!) and a fourth pressing in glorious Stereo!
