~THE BEATLES~

Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band

Parlophone Records 1967, Original MONO UK 1.st pressing.

IMPOSSIBLY RARE AND INCREDIBLY DESIRABLE!!

RELISTED ITEM: NO RESERVE!!!!

Rarity and 1st press.

The Beatles was already a huge success when Sgt Peppers was released on June 1st 1967 in the UK and the following day in the US, but most of the records sold in stores from that date on were STEREO pressings. This is an original MONO 1st press; much, much rarer and very, very valuable. STEREO was already in 1967 the default medium for mainstream rock records and it wouldn’t be an unfair estimate to make, that the STEREO versions of this record outnumber the MONO’s 5-1. Another fun fact is, that unlike the STEREO version of Sgt. Peppers, the MONO was mixed by The Beatles themselves as the only Beatles LP ever!

To sum it up, we’re dealing with a record that’s 43 years old, it’s a mono 1st press original from the UK, where it was recorded at Abbey Road Studios mixed by the members of The Beatles and pressed at Parlophone outside of London, with what millions of people around the world consider the magnum opus of the Beatles; It’s super-rare, it’s very desirable and very valuable. Here’s your chance to own a true gem in musical history. We’re starting it off on $1.00! There’s a reserve, but we’ll tell you this; it’s a lot less than what the record is worth!

The Proof:

How do we know it’s a first press? Good question! Here’s the proof:

The Vinyl:

 * Side 1: "XEX 637-1". Stamper number found on left side of label is "1", on the right of label "AAL".

* Side 2: "XEX 638-1". Upside-down "V" Followed by "TO".

The Labels:
* Black and yellow original Parlophone label. Only on original UK pressings!

*“Sold in the UK…” printed across the labels. THIS ONLY FEATURED ON THE FIRST PRESSING!!! So there’s no getting around it; this is a 1st press!

* “The Gramophone Co. ltd” printed across the rim of label which is only present on the earliest pressings.

* “Made in Gt. Britain” solidifies that is indeed a UK original.

The Cover:

* Genuine “Garrod and Lofthouse” flipback 1st press gatefold cover with a thick spine. “Mono” on the top right corner of back-cover. Only on MONO 1.st pressings.

Condition and Grading:

Vinyl and Audio (EX):

The vinyl in these early pressing Parlophone releases are thicker and heavier than most other records. It has a wider groove and lies perfectly flat on the turntable. The vinyl is close to top-notch condition.  At first glance it’s close to flawless and still has its original sheen, as if it just came out of the factory. A closer inspection will reveal very insignificant wear and tear, but you really need to study the vinyl closely to discover it. By any standard, the vinyl looks smashing! The audio is Excellent with absolutely no pops, scratches, repeating or anything else that would worsen the audio experience. The audio does have very slight surface-sound, but in all fairness, we’re talking about a 43 year old recording on an antiquated media. This record sounds great and presents the legendary Beatles songs in an exquisitely smooth and authentic fashion!!

Cover (G to VG):

In all honesty the cover is the real down-point of this record. Both on the outside and on the inside, the cover is beautiful and glossy. There is no significant ring-wear or any visible wear and tear. You can obviously see the cover isn’t new, but when taking into consideration, that the cover is 43 years old, you’d be amazed at how good-looking it still is. If the above was the full story, I’d rate the cover as an EX (excellent), but sadly it isn’t. THE PROBLEM IS THIS: The spine of cover is split (see picture). It still holds the cover firmly together, but it’s not a charm to look at. Overall the cover rates at "G" (good) to “VG” (very good), as most of the cover looks brilliant, but is put down three rates (EX, VG++, VG+) to VG because of the cover-spine. Another unfortunate fact is that the original inner sleeves are not to be found and therefore not included in this auction. We realize fully, that the damaged spine of the cover as well as the missing inner sleeve is unfavourable to the overall value of the record, which is one of the reasons why we’re ready to let it go at a ridiculously low reserve.

Reserve and value

We have investigated the value of this record thoroughly. Most of the time a first press MONO, like this one, sells for about $700-1200 on ebay depending on its’ condition. Right now there are three copies for sale as “buy it now” items ranging from $578-1500. This particular copy we’re selling here, has excellent audio quality which should place it in the upper price-range. At the same time, the split spine on the cover presses the value downwards. We always want to ensure, that our potential bidders can get away with a great bargain so this record is now put on auction with NO RESERVE!!!
