Description
PMC7027 A 1st pressing of Sgt Pepper on the UK Parlophone label. Matrix -1/-1. Stampers 4-GLL/6-RPA. The record comes housed in its original cover which happens to be one of the earliest possible incarnations of Sgt. Pepper - the 'Fourth Proof'. This was the final pre-production proof by the printer before embarking on the first print run of the final production version. On the right hand interior flip-back you can see the following text 'Fourth Proof' and 'AR D13217' - which are not present on the final production sleeves.
Cover (VG+) This rare early cover remains in great condition and retains much of its original shine. There are a couple of light creases and markings, but nothing that significant. The flip-backs are fully intact as are the opening edges. Top and bottom edges are in good condition too, but there is excessive wear to the spine. As you can see in the photos there's a three inch split - this has not made its way through to the interior. In the photos I've used a standard 1st press Mono cover to act as a comparative, but all full size shots are of the fourth proof cover. Please note the 'Patents Pending' text on the 'Fourth Proof' cover. Patents were obtained around the time of release and only the very earliest covers show this. The standard production cover is in marginally better condition than the 'fourth proof' version - please let me know if you are interested in this as I would be quite happy to include this for free in the final sale price should you want it too.
Vinyl (VG+) Has survived the years well especially considering how popular these mono copies were. The vinyl retains much of its original lustre. Under close inspection I can only see a couple of light marks on either side - nothing that is 'feelable'. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals an, at least, VERYGOOD+ level of playback. Intros and inbetweens are reasonably quiet and the audio comes across with good clarity. A few light crackles are audible in places, but nothing that is really intrusive at all. Of particular note is track 6 where a light mark does cause a few light crackles and a few more are audible during the intro to [Within You..] However, it is quite evident why these mono copies are so sought after as their fantastic sound quality is still apparent after all these years. A very solid enjoyable listen.
