Description
Stereo 1st Press of Pepper on the UK Parlophone label from summer 1967. Matrix 1/1. Stampers 1-O/2-H. Not only is this a 1st pressing, but it is the very 1st issue cover the - WIDE SPINE. For reference these wide-spine covers pre-date the FOURTH PROOF copies and are effectively the very 1st edition. Also, at 1st issue Mono was very much still the order of the day and, therefore, stereo wide-spine is THE most difficult 1st press Pepper to get hold of. In addition there's the 'patents applied' white inner and the original cut-outs available too. What's also very nice is that this is one of the best preserved copies I have ever seen - the audio really is in a league of its own.
Vinyl (Ex+) Wowzers this is one fine looking slab of vinyl. Without doubt this copy has seen the very lightest of use - just look at those pristine labels. Under close inspection there are a couple of light marks each side - please be assured that these are minor and in no way sound. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals an EXCELLENT+ level of playback. Intros and inbetweens are really nice and quiet and the audio comes across with an exceptional level of clarity. It is easy to rave on about the sound on these early copies, but this really is one of the finest copies I've ever heard. Resolution/clarity/frequency response - everything at the top top level. Interference is almost non-existent. We only detected a couple of light crackles in one or two places [e.g. Mr Kite] the entire way through [literally]. I shouldn't need to remind anyone that that is very unusual. Even the repeating 'nonsense noise' at the end sounds different and more stand-out than any other copy I've ever heard.
Cover (Ex) Again in superb shape and clearly the original owner must have been one seriously fastidious individual. Lovely shiny front and rear. Yes, there's a couple of thumb creases, but nothing remotely that stands out. The colour reproduction is absolutely first class - often these copies have seen some daylight and have faded..but not here. The interior is utterly flawless. Then there's that wide-spine...often crushed..this one is in great shape showing only light wear. All text is visible - even the ends are in far better than average shape. Over all the cover still retains great rigidity and the openings are still reasonably sharp. Difficult to imagine finding a true wide-spine stereo copy looking any better than this.
Cut-outs (Ex+) Pretty much perfect.
Inner (Vg) Bottom seam split - otherwise OK.
