Description
THE BEATLES - 'SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND'
Without doubt, this is the rarest UK variant of this album, with just a handful of copies escaping the production line in late-1969.
The catalogue number on the label is MONO (PMC 7027) but bear the STEREO matrix indicator 'YEX', not the expected mono 'XEX' prefix.
This error occurs on both labels and both sides of the disc play in STEREO.
Earliest matrices: YEX 637-1 & YEX 638-1
Stamper codes: 3/GLL & 4/GLT
Vinyl weight: 177g
Housed in a partly laminated* inner-flipback 'Garrod & Lofthouse - Patents Pending' printed stereo gatefold cover.
Complete with its original 'Patent No...' inner-sleeve and unused cut-out sheet.
CONDITION
Disc
Labels: EXCELLENT
Both are clean and undamaged with light spindle wear around each centre hole.
Visual: EXCELLENT
Both playing surfaces are perfectly clean and retain all of their 'as new' deep gloss shine. apart form a tiny 6mm radial scratch on side 2, both sides are practically unmarked in strong daylight. Even close examination directly beneath my unforgiving, powerful halogen desk lamp fails to reveal anything more than some harmless wispy hairlines and a sparkling rainbow shine. Both sides of this unusually heavy copy lie 100% flat on the turntable when playing.
Sound Quality: EXCELLENT -
This copy has received a moderate amount of play but is still extremely listenable. My careful play-check detected a few ticks at the end of 'With A Little Help From My Friends' along with some light background on 'She's Leaving Home'. I would have graded 'EXCELLENT' if it were not for a single groove jump on 'A Day In The Life' caused by the aforementioned mark. However, it would be very difficult to find another copy of this variant, let alone an upgrade.
Cover: EXCELLENT
The cover which houses this disc is also unusual as it features a rare manufacturing fault.
The front cover is clean &bright with just a single small 'thumbnail' wrinkle towards the opening edge and all corners & opening edges are undamaged.
*The unusual detail for this cover is that it is the area inside the gatefold from George's left shoulder and the first two columns of the lyrics on the rear panel are missing their laminate. This has not been removed but appear to have occurred at manufacture as the roll of laminate ran out.
All seams are unstressed and unsplit and the spine is fully worded.
Inner-sleeve: EXCELLENT
Clean & flat with minor storage wrinkles only.
Cut-out Sheet: MINT
