THE BEATLES ~ THE BEATLES’ SECOND ALBUM (1964)

DECCA GLOVERSVILLE CONTRACT PRE-RELEASE 1963 PRESSING WITH A DOUBLE-PRESSING RING AND THE MISPRINT TIMING ON THE LABELS

Incredibly rare barely played Capitol Records promotional copy of The Beatles’ Second Album. It’s very hard to find a similar copy with a large blue rubber ink stamp reading “FREE Promotional Album Not To Be Sold”. All of the promotional copies, besides the stamp, contain the RIAA 3 factory identifier in the lower right-hand corner of the back cover. I’ve never seen the promotional copy of this album where the Scranton pressing was replaced with the DECCA’s contract pressing. These promotional copies were pressed at the end of 1963 and sent to the media and radio station several months before the album’s official release date in April, 1964. The labels of this copy have two pressing rings, the central one measuring 1” and the outer one with the diameter of 2.75”. This label variation was used by DECCA Records in between 1961~63. The label variation of 1964 contained only one 1” pressing ring. Besides the double pressing ring, the labels of this copy have a very early “2:23” misprint timing instead of the correct one “2:33” on the “You Can’t Do That” track on Side 1 along with no timings for “Long Tall Sally” and “I Call Your Name” on Side 2. One can easily find the Gloversville pressing plant’s identifiers in the runout groove in the form of an etched “I” stick. The full matrix numbers located on Side 1 and Side 2 are as follows: T1 2080 T12 I I I / T2 2080 T14 I I I.  This promotional album features an original Capitol Records bright blue inner sleeve displaying the other Capitol releases.

The promotional cover, the inner sleeve and the vinyl are in stunning Near Mint Minus condition.
