Description
This is a stereo first press of Yellow Submarine that was released on 17 January 1969.
The matrix numbers on this copy are YEX 715-1 and YEX 716-1.
You’ll see on the label above the title that it states “Sold In U.K. subject to resale price conditions, see price lists” – this only appears on first presses and disappears from second presses from Spring 1969 onwards.
Also take a look at the rear of the album cover – you may be aware that early presses have the red lines above and below the sleevenotes (this stopped from third presses in 1971) but you may not know that there was no sleeve manufacturer printed on the lower flap on very first copies, something that was corrected from second presses when “Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. Patent No. 943,895? appeared.
The sleeve, which has the red lines and no sleeve manufacturer, is in very good condition. It has a few age marks and a shops sticker (Osborne’s of Banbury) on the back and some ringwear/shelfwear and some creasing but is solid enough. There is also some feathering around the opening.
The record itself has a lot of marks and there’s a couple on each side you’d expect to be troublesome but I’ve played it all the way through and it’s not a bad listen. There’s some crackle throughout, more noticeable between tracks and the quieter moments, and some ticks (the quieter, seldom played side 2 shows this up the worst where it can be a little annoying) but no skips, sticks or jumps. The spindle holes show little signs of wear.
The original black inner is with it and is in good condition. There's a small 1cm split at the bottom and a very small tear at the top. It also shows signs of ringwear.
Overall a solid enough copy of this rare Beatles album. If you plan on playing it regularly a proper clean may be in order to try and eliminate the crackle.
