The iconic WHITE ALBUM, actually had no title, but time and legend has named it thus! It was simply, 'The Beatles' and the First Off The Press were rare and Numberd, as this record is. This is a side opening gatefold, housing two LP's, a poster, with lyric sheet on the reverse and four photos of the Fab Four, obviously! To find a White Album in such Excellent Plus Condition and complete, without damage is rare in itself, but to find one with low Mother & Stampers is quite a find!
This album is in Excellent Plus Condition, with only a very few hair-lines. Its vinyl on all four sides is shiny and has that lovely heavy EMI weight and a dark lustre of pretty much un-marked vinyl. The white double sleeve, obviously because of its age, now over 42 years old and its colour, being white, is just a little discoloured and aged, but understandably so. It has a solid and undamaged look, with a nice clean opening to the titles and black and white photos on the inside of the gatefold. It has all four photos, which are in almost Mint Condition, having been, obviously, left in their cover and not pinned to a wall. The poster & lyric sheet is fully intact, with just the signs of pin holes and possibly blue-tac, which has long gone, but the corners, whilst used for displaying this poster of 1968 on many a teenager's bedroom wall, are all square and there and the poster is a nice sign of the times and makes the complete set!
As with all The Beatles works, the EMI Matrix, Mother & Stamper Codes are in the run offs on all four sides of the vinyl and are, to those that know, a sign of the LP's provenance and pressing. Whilst this is a rare and Numbered LP - 242063, it is a still interesting to see the EMI codes, with: Side One Mother, being '1' and Stamper 'G L', being '18'. Side Two Mother '4', with an odd Stamper of 'G R R R', but with a pre-fix letter over marked, which is difficult to make out. This is probably Stmaper '222', as it stands, but the prefix and the 'G' could be an error. This is unusual, but Stampers were often mixed and matched, as they tended, being copper based, to wear. Side Three has Mother '2' and Stamper 'RAA' or '233' and Side Four has Mother '4' and Stamper 'RDD' or '200'. This suggests that the Mothers are low and would suggest First Pressing, with higher Stampers.
This is a fantastic record and its over all condition is superb, belying its 42 plus years of life. Who ever ownded this looked after it and played it carefully and seldom. Grading is difficult and more and more I tend to use my own system of visual, audio and experience. I would rate this album highly and say it is Excellent Plus, which, using official guides, could be higher. The Record Collector's Guide is below, but I find this can over-grade. So for me a fantastic example of a 1968 rarity and a true collector's item! Plus a fantastic listen by the iconic Group we know of as The Beatles!
I do not, now, sell anywhere else in the world, other than the UK. Russia and Ebay.com have not helped, with scams seemingly allowed to happen frequently, so sorry all the rest of Europe, but it is too stressful and the UK is handy and here! Please do not bid if you are not UK based.
Finally, postage is based on items valued below £46.00. If this LP goes over that, then the quoted price does not apply, as it will have to be sent First Class Guaranteed Next Day, Signed For. This will be £6.90, to include pakaging. Please, once you have won the auction, wait for me to invoice you or check first before paying, please.
Many thanks all!
MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.
EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and / or creasing.
VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.
GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.
FAIR: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and / or defaced.
POOR: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.
BAD: The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection filler."
As well as the above grades, Near Mint is often used as well; this is really for a record that appears new but is known to have been played because the label has light spindle marks or because it has come from a previous owner and is assumed to have been played by them. For records which appear to fall between the accepted grades, + and - are also often added to the grading.
In addition to the basic grading, any individual faults should be noted separately such as if an otherwise Excellent cover has a name written on it, or a 7" single is missing its original centre etc.
