Up for auction is the incredibly rare factory sealed copy of The Beatles “Yesterday and Today” album released by Capitol Records in 1966 with the unique RIAA number that looks like “8” . The existence of this symbol at the bottom right corner of the back cover is quite mysterious. We’ve found a thread on the Steve Hoffman forum where the thread starter posted his correspondence with Perry Cox concerning the cover of the “Yesterday and Today” album with the RIAA “8” identifier. We hope the author doesn’t mind us posting it here as it’s public already:
“Hi Scott, those are actually pretty rare. They were hand etched on the artwork that was submitted via sub-contract from Capitol Records to Decca Records to press records for them to help meet the large demand. On some of the covers, that crude hand scribbled "8" appeared. Many, if not most of the Decca pressed records were also issued in covers lacking the 8 that were supplied by Capitol. Again, the "8" character was actually etched on the black print film for the cover pressing. Hope this helps. They contracted on call mostly in 65 and 66.”
Without any doubts we can’t disagree on the fact that this is the rarest cover variation of this Stereo issue. However, with all due respect, we can’t agree with the author regarding the fact that this symbol is the “8” number and that it was hand scribbled. When enlarging it on the macro level, it becomes evident that this symbol just reminds of the number “8” and when compared to the photo of the cover posted by the author in the thread, it also becomes evident that this symbol is a stamp as it’s fully identical to the one present on the currently listed copy. It remains to add that the RIAA “8” identifier, which is always associated with the DECCA Records contract pressing, in the case with the “Yesterday and Today” album is attributed to the Capitol Records, Scranton, PA pressing in Frank Daniel’s book under “Capitol Records Cover Numbers”. The cover variation of this copy contains a “Trunk” paste over slick. The issue with the “8” symbol comes only in Stereo and doesn’t come across on the Mono version. The album remains factory sealed with the fully intact shrink wrap containing the original breathe holes, two on the front cover. Through the fully intact shrink wrap at the cover’s mouth one can see the original 1st print yellow Capitol Records “Capitol ’66; Sounds Great!” inner sleeve which was used only on the 1st pressing copies of this album. Absolutely guaranteed that this copy has the 1st print Capitol black multi-color band labels with the ST-2553 catalog number and without the “Subsidiary of…” rim text inside. Outstanding final upgrade factory sealed copy of The Beatles “Yesterday and Today” in great Mint Minus condition.
★
This factory sealed copy of the extremely rare issue with the "8" symbol is in amazing Mint Minus condition. There's just some very light age discoloration spot at the bottom right corner on the front cover, but aside from that the cover is beautiful white. There's a very light push-in to the top left corner of the back cover. The top right corner of the front cover still contains the original record store price sticker with the intact perforation.
