Description

Released six years after their self-titled debut, here's The Cars' 1984 LP "Heartbeat City", featuring the hit "You Might Think" and the lovely ballad "Drive", both penned by Ric Ocasek, who shared lead vocalist duties in the group with Benjamin Orr.    This is a Specialty Records pressing, denoted by the SRC logo in the runout and the E A S T embossed around the spindle hole on side B. (You do have to look close to see the latter, but it is there.) This is also a PROMO copy, as stated at the top of the back cover and on the labels on both sides of the vinyl.  it also features something called "QUIEX II".  That's a pure vinyl formulation that was colored with dye rather than the more commonly used carbon black (which has coarse granules and creates noise).  What's cool about this is that it makes the record translucent - if you hold it up in front of a strong light source!  Hype stickers appear on the front cover in the upper corners, including one for "Quiex II".
The vinyl show some marks, but they do not seem to affect play, and the gatefold cover is near mint!  (FYI: I see similar promo copies sometime say they are "white label", but when I compare the photos in those listings with others that are not for promo copies, the labels look the same color to me, so I am not using that description here - although, yeah, the labels are pretty much white :-)  The inner sleeve, with the lyrics printed on one side, is just starting to have some splitting occur on one side and a bit on the bottom; otherwise, it is also in great shape.  All in all, a nice package from one of the seminal bands of the 1980s.

P.S.  Did you catch Ric Ocasek and Pia Zadora's cameo roles as beatniks in John Waters' 1988 film "Hairspray"? (That't the original with Divine, not the 2007 remake with John Travolta.)  The music choices in the film are great!
