Description
1998 original double LP of The Charlatans best recordings, as defined by their label at the time, Beggars Banquet. I bought this new in 1999 in Soho, and it's been in my collection ever since. It was played rarely, and has gone completely unplayed since around 2002 when I put out of my own circulation. I've not play-tested it since - I know it played fine then and has been stored perfectly ever since.
I am a collector who only uses Record Collector and Discogs gradings, and does so conservatively and fairly. I've been misled too many times by people going for the next rating up rather than the next one down, and I like to make sure I'm as open and honest in my descriptions and photos on the rare occasions that I sell.
The photos show it in the condition it is in. The glare in the main photo is from the light in the room against the dark sleeve and isn't on the item itself. I can give more photos on request, and can happily answer any questions you may have. It's been well stored, the outer gatefold sleeve does have some shelfwear so I have rated it a Very Good ++. It's a well made record, and has stood the test of time well. The inners, in two differing shades of blue, one for Record One and one for Record Two, are both in Excellent condition, although record two does have the beginnings of a minor seam split - it hasn't broken all the way through and it around an inch and a half in length. The shelfwear is what you'd expect from a record that was loved and used, but loved and used with care. There's some minor ring wear too, again, reflective of its age.
The records themselves are again on the top of end of Very Good, so a Very Good ++. I'm not one for doing a professional clean for the sake of the photos - they've been looked after within the inners, within the gatefold, within a proper heavy duty poly sleeve all this time. I've not play tested it, because that just detracts from it, but there are some very minor marks on the vinyl, again typical of age, no major scratches and I would not expect them to interfere with play. There are no deep scratches or marks - just the standard surfaces of records that have been kept as they have been over this time.
This was reissued recently, which of course made me feel old. I was a young adult when I bought this. Time, and life, have moved on, and I am listing this with some reluctance but also a hope that it will go to a home who will enjoy it even more than I did back then, and who can give this unique piece of Charley's history the pride of place within a true fan's collection that it deserves. This was the compilation that marked the end of their hugely successful time on Beggars Banquet, that quintessential Indie label of the 90s, and it is making me yearn for the indie clubs of my youth and the haircuts I had just thinking about it.
