Description
By mid-1958, the 10-inch shellac 78 RPM record was a format in its twilight, kept alive briefly in the UK market by older home radiograms and jukeboxes.
This specific pressing of The Crickets' "Think It Over" and "Fool's Paradise" catches that precise moment of technological obsolescence.Recorded at Norman Petty’s studio setup in Clovis, New Mexico, these tracks represent the apex of Buddy Holly's studio experimentation.
"Think It Over" relies on a strict, steady rockabilly bounce, notable primarily for Vi Petty’s sharp, persistent organ accents.
"Fool's Paradise" is quieter—a melancholic, co-written Sonny West track that relies heavily on layered, close-harmony vocal backings.
Historically, this UK release on Coral Records landed in a culture defined by the rise of the post-war teenager, where American rock and roll was fundamentally shifting British youth culture away from traditional dance band music. Because the UK industry abandoned shellac production almost entirely by 1960, surviving rock and roll 78s from this late window are distinct historical artifacts of a dead medium.
This copy features the standard UK Coral label, which quickly succeeded the fleeting, early "Vogue Coral" hybrid imprint used by Decca
Unlike their earlier raw hits, "Fool's Paradise" is an example of Petty’s increasingly dense studio overdubbing techniques, an approach cut short by Holly's death less than a year later.
Condition Report
Shellac Surface: VG++. Strong, deep original lustre. Free of any deep or problematic scratches, showing only minor, faint sleeve removal marks under strong light.
Labels: Clean, dark Coral labels with minimal spindle trailing. No ink markings, tearing, or sticker residue around the standard small spindle hole.
Audio: Plays clean and loud with the expected, flat surface noise characteristic of late-50s heavy shellac compounds, but no major pops, clicks, or groove skips.
Shipping & Protection
Given the fragile, brittle nature of late-era 78s, standard cardboard mailers are inadequate. The disc will be packed using a defensive, multi-layered method:
Placed between two oversized layers of thick, rigid corrugated card.
Wrapped in multiple layers of heavy-grade bubble wrap to absorb transit shocks.
Boxed inside a custom double-skin heavy-duty outer carton with void fill to prevent any shifting during transit.
Your order will be carefully packed and promptly dispatched.
