Description
1985 brought The Damned's seminal Phantasmagoria album, where the UK punk band embraced their post-punk dark side, and enamored many denizens of the gothic community. Singer Dave Vanian became an icon of gothic culture with his vampiric image and sonorous voice. Phantasmagoria, with its cemetery cover (complete with a ghostly hooded woman and raven on a headstone) and artistically eerie band photos, cemented the band's place in gothic history. You still had those punk roots in songs like Grimly Fiendish, but the band's gothic sound came forth with songs like Shadow of Love and the Phantom of the Opera-esque midnight lament, Sanctum Sanctorum (complete with pipe organ, piano, and violin!).
I picked up this album up in the early 90s to go with my vinyl copies of Strawberries and The Black Album also by The Damned (along with The Phantom Chords), and it's pretty much in the exact same condition as I found it. The record itself is made in gorgeous marble white vinyl, is beautifully clean, and plays well - I only played it once since I had another copy that wasn't on white vinyl.The inner sleeve is also in very good clean condition, and features some great photos of the band members including a stunning portrait of Dave Vanian. The album cover is in fair condition, with some record wear showing on the front cover and at the top where the record itself has slightly cut its way through (when properly stored, this isn't a problem), but it still displays well, and holds its precious vinyl just fine.
Phantasmagoria by The Damned is a definite necessity for any gothic and/or punk music collection, and there's just something fun about having a beautiful edition of such a special album! This would be a great gift for any fan of The Damned.
