The Debut Performance of Hoagy Carmichael on Gennett with Hitch's Harmonists

Offered is a rare release in the History Of Early Jazz.
In today's parlance, this composition from 1925 on the Gennett Label would be called the Debut Performance of the great Hoagy Carmichael.

On this record, Hoagy makes his first appearance as a musician - and performs his own compositions with The Happy Harmonists - Wash Board Blues and Bone Yard Shuffle.

Carmichael's first recorded song, initially titled "Free Wheeling", was written for (Bix) Beiderbecke, whose band, The Wolverines recorded it as "Riverboat Shuffle" in 1924 for Gennett Records in Richmond, Indiana. The song became a jazz staple. (Mitchell Parish's lyrics were added in 1939.)  Carmichael's other early musical compositions included "Wash Board Blues" and "Bone Yard Shuffle", which Curtis Hitch and his band, Hitch's Happy Harmonists, recorded at the Gennett studios. The band's instrumental rendition of "Washboard Blues", recorded on May 19, 1925, was the earliest recording in which Carmichael performed his own songs, including an improvised piano solo.


The "Roaring Twenties" phenomena seems inseparable from these early Jazz compositions. Not only was recorded music (unlike "live" music) completely new - but available genres were almost exclusively Classical and Opera.

These new Jazz rhythms were profoundly infectious - changing both moods and attitudes. "Modern" folks (like us) have trouble imagining that there ever could have been a world without recorded music and its variety of genres. But in fact - the first commercially available recorded music is only about 100 years old!

Ah, technology - it creates new human realities, and the humans begin to forget much that was before:

THE SHELLAC : VERY GOOD

The disc needed cleaning when we first came upon it, and we did that. It shows some use - as if the original owners were saying "now this is different, and quite wonderful - let's hear it again".

So there is scuffing. There are also marks - however they are largely cosmetic and light in the shellac surface. The visual grade is Very Good, but the playgrade is better.

There are no chips or cracks. 

I felt that we had to complete a playgrade - we couldn't pass on an opportunity to listen to the first Hoagy. Both sides play through with no skips or sticks. It does have the light background noise produced by the early recording technology. There is also an occasional click.

The Red & Gold Gennett labels are in nice shape (please see our Gallery Photos). 

 

We have placed Hoagy and The Harmonists into a protective plastic sleeve.

It will be arranged into a sturdy mailer with plenty of protective packaging for its journey to you. These original, early recordings are great treasures, and while their shellac composition is brittle - we have not lost one yet!

We have a good deal of experience with the transit providers, and will prepare your mailer with great care.
