Never-issued work from this legendary UK combo – a set that looks familiar, in comparison to some of the group's other album covers of the period – but which features rare live performances that were recently unearthed in the tape archive of the group's drummer Trevor Tompkins! The vibe here is fantastic – as the group begin with a tune by contemporary on the scene Amancio D'Silva, then move into other work by group members that rivals their famous studio albums from the same period – a really legendary body of music that's added to by this excellent set! Tompkins himself is fantastic – and right at the core of a lineup that features Don Rendell on tenor, soprano, and flute – plus Ian Carr on trumpet and flugelhorn, Michael Garrick on piano, and Dave Green on bass. The set is full of modern modal groovers – titles that include "Jaipur", "Mirage", "Jubal", "Big City Strut", "Black Hair", "On", and "Bathsheba”.
Jaipur, Mirage, Jubal and Black Hair were performed live on Jazz Club on Wednesday, March 26th 1969. On!, Bath Sheba and Big City Strut were recorded on Friday, June 20th 1969 and broadcast on Jazz Workshop that Wednesday, July 9th.
All were preserved in the Trevor Tomkins Tape Archive.
