The Doors - Absolutely Live

This is a vintage British promotional poster for The Doors "Absolutely Live" album released in 1970.

Measuring approximately 38 x 53.5 inches (3 feet by 4.5 feet, or 97 x 136 cm) this poster is of the size used for large advertising hoardings or to be displayed in railway stations etc. It's much larger than a standard in-store promo poster.

The imagery is of the original 1970 LP cover, which was changed completely when the album was transferred to CD in 1996, so it's probably safe to say the poster wasn't printed for promotional use in a recent decade. Having checked out a few discography sites it would appear the last time this album appeared on vinyl in the UK with the original cover design was 1976. So my guess is the poster dates from between 1970 and 1976. I can't imagine it being any later. Posters of this size were used for major national promotional campaigns, and I can't see any reason why the record company would have undertaken one of those after the final pressing of the album for the UK.

The only identifying manufacturers' text is a small row of print in the bottom right hand corner of the poster which states "Made in Great Britain" with a CND logo and an Anarchy logo. There's no clue of the date of printing or the printing company, and I can't find any information anywhere about this manufacturing mark. I thought the use of the CND and Anarchy logos may give a hint as to the printing date, but it turns out the former first appeared in common use in 1958 and the latter in 1968, which only reveals the poster would have been printed after 1968.

Apparently this poster was a warehouse find, so has spent its life in storage. As a consequence the condition is truly excellent. There are a few very minor creases here and there, with some slight indentation damage on a small area of the top left hand side (see photos). Otherwise the poster looks new with no discolouration or ageing.

Due to the sheer size this would look impressive one anyone's wall, although you will need a relatively large space to hang it!
