Description
As if The Doors self-titled debut album wasn't incredible enough, in less than 9 months the band releases (what I and many others believe) their Pop Masterpiece....'Strange Days'. Every aspect of this album from cover art to the recording of it; the production, to the songs themselves ....was sensational. It really was and is 'High Art'....easily on par with The Beatles's groundbreaking Sgt. Pepper album released a few months before.
The copy I'm offering could very well be the "strangest" 'Strange Days' version ever made. When quickly examined, one sees a 'Stereo' sticker on a Mono printed jacket....fairly rare but not highly unusual. However, if looked at a little more closely (using the eBay zoom feature) you will see the Stereo catalog number (EKS-74014) at the upper portion of the spine while the Mono catalog numbers are clearly printed at the front and back. This I've never seen. In addition, both labels indicate a Mono recording BUT when reading the matrix numbers in the deadwax areas, the information corresponds to the Stereo version.....this combination of cover and record printing errors is extremely rare and could very well be the only one in existence. All that said, this pressing is mostly desirable for the incredible audio contained within the grooves. This is the cleanest and best sounding 1st U.S. pressing of The Doors' 'Strange Days' Lp I've ever heard....and I've heard hundreds of them. It is highly unlikely you will ever find a better sounding copy like this on eBay again.
Condition of Lp Jacket: Very Good(+).....though the jacket shows some wear (mostly to the front and spine) it still holds up very well. The colors are still quite vivid and definitely has that "first press" contrast and balance. Subsequent printings were not as faithful to Joel Brodsky's original photo negative. The card stock used was also particular...a little thicker than usual and treated with a delicate varnish. Not entirely matt but not glossy either.
Condition of Photo/Lyric Inner-Sleeve: Excellent(-) .....this is the matt version on slightly thicker paper. Very well preserved with some age-discoloration, creasing and wear to the opening. There is a split at the bottom and one on the side. These can be easily repaired if desired.
Condition of Record: Near Mint.....absolutely beautiful....hardly a blemish to be seen...some faint hairlines only under strong light. Vinyl has good weight as well.....Side 1 label has what looks like residue of gold-metal printing ink at the top portion (see photo) Side 2 label is perfect. As mentioned earlier, the audio on this pressing is superb....detailed, balanced, clear and distortion-free. 3 or 4 "ticks" per side....this is the copy you want for this timeless album. PLEASE NOTE: PLAYBACK IS IN STEREO.
Matrix Numbers: Side 1 EKS 74014 A (AL-1)
Side 2 EKS 74014 B (AL-1) A R O 2/4 68 (very lightly scripted at 8:00)
