Description
The Flamingos on Chance Records 1154 45 rpm record from 1954.
Recorded February 17, 1954 and released in March 1954 which was the last year for the pioneering Chance label out of Chicago, Illinois.
Side one Cross Over the Bridge.
Side two Listen to My Plea.
Rare vintage doo wop from a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group.
Nice gloss, and to borrow a phrase from another auction that I ran across while doing some research, this record has “stored-without-a-sleeve scuffiness†but NO deep scratches and just a slight warp. The record is a bit dirty in places and I am afraid to try to clean it so I’m leaving it in unrestored condition.
I’ve played both sides all the way through and there are NO SKIPS. Some crackle and pops can be heard which I attribute to the surface dirt. The spots of “dirt†appear mostly to be fingerprints, but I’m not sure what the substance actually is. I believe a professional cleaning, (or even a cleaning by someone who just knows what they are doing) would reduce the crackle down to virtually nothing.
Please understand that I am not a record collector or dealer, nor do I have any experience in grading records. This 45 was found in a platter pack that was given to me. Based upon the grading guidelines in The Goldmine Standard Catalog of American Records that I checked out of the library and those provided on the Ebay message boards I believe this record to be at least in VG condition if not in VG+.
Please ask any questions that you may have prior to placing your bid. I will respond ASAP.
For this auction we will accept PayPal, cashier’s check or money orders only. No personal checks.
I will ship in the manner preferred by the seller. First class shipping is $3.00 and insurance is strongly recommended and will be provided at exact cost to the buyer.
I have had a lot of fun researching The Flamingos and Chance Records so I’ll share just a little history behind this record. In January of 1953, manager Ralph Leon brought to Chance its first vocal group, the Flamingos. Members were Sollie McElroy (lead), cousins Ezekial (Zeke) Carey and Jacob (Jake) Carey, and cousins Johnny Carter and Paul Wilson. The group recorded with King Kolax in their earlier sessions, later with the Red Holloway band (including Louis Carpenter, Hawk Lee, Robert “Hendu†Henderson and Mac Easton), and finally with an Al Smith band with Red Holloway, Mac Easton, Willie Jones, Quinn Wilson, and Vernel Fournier when they recorded the record in this auction. On subsequent release, neither the cover of the Patti Page hit nor the bluesy “Listen to My Plea†were appealing enough to sustain the Flamingos’ name with the public. In March 1954 “Cross Over the Bridge†got some play in Chicago and other cities, however.
Thank you for the interest in our auction. Again, please ask any questions that you may have about this record and we’ll be happy to provide the answers.
On Sep-23-06 at 13:11:53 PDT, seller added the following information:After looking around Ebay I found another record like this one which refers to "dead wax" numbers. Assuming that these are the tiny numbers etched into the vinyl near the label, this record also has the dead wax numbers 45-5132 87 and 45-5133 87. The "87" on both sides is set apart from the other numbers just a little bit, up and to the right. I hope this info helps. Thanks for the bids and watches so far, and again, please email any questions. Thanks!
