In a complete turnaround from the psychedelic madness that marked their previous albums, The Dead break out the acoustic stuff, and do a triumphant 180. Let's start with Robert Hunter, who in my mind, is the untold star of the album. His lyrics are just so damn good here, from the down home stylings of "Uncle John's Band and "Dire Wolf" to the more traditional sounds of "Black Peter" which would have sounded right at home on any number of Delta Blues singers albums. Another change was the band's willingness to step back from the long jams in favor of more compact, but at the same time, tastier soloing. Garcia was very much into the guitar playig of Don Rich, Buck Owen's right hand man in Bakersfield, and the influence is all over the place. And of course, who can resist the singalong fun of "Casey Jones". They were sometimes known as "The Good Ol' Grateful Dead" this album fits that moniker like a favorite old tie dye.
