Description

original reggae 7" Jamaican 45 produced by Lee Perry: The Hurricanes "Tell Me Tell Me" / Hippy Boys "Excuse Me" (Upsetter Records)

Seven inch Jamaican single
THE HURRICANES ?
TELL ME TELL ME
HIPPY BOYS
EXCUSE ME
Produced by Lee 'Scratch' Perry
original hand-stamped Upsetters pressing

This ultra rare hand-stamped "UPSETTER RECORDS Produced & Distributed by LEE PERRY" single features two killer selections. A great Jamaican vocal harmony group (which I think may be The Hurricanes or maybe even The Bleechers or The Classics) sing like champions with the vigorous, almost ska-like tempo of "Tell Me Tell Me". Meanwhile a DJ (who sounds a bit like King Stitt) adds a whole heap of tasty "Excuse Me" toasting outbursts to the scorchin' Upsetters aka Hippy Boys' rhyth-o-matic instrumental on the flip. Another choice musical biscuit distributed personally by Mr. Perry back when music carried the swing.

Hear & read my Lee Perry interviews (including a new-to-the-website extended sound segment from my 1982 interview featured in the 1983 issue of the Reggae & African Beat magazine with Scratch at the Black Ark also up for auction this week) plus my original liner notes for the LEE PERRY REGGAE GREATS compilation on Mango Records at midnightdread.com for more from The Upsetter.

The ORIGINAL 7" Jamaican UPSETTER RECORDS is hand-stamped on one side 'UPSETTER RECORDS Produced & Distributed by LEE PERRY'. The circa 1969 - 1970 vinyl is in VG+ condition. It plays great, does not skip, and is not warped. Hand writing on both sides (see photos). Made in Jamaica.

On Jun-14-04 at 07:32:35 PDT, seller added the following information:

This just in from Bob at Nighthawk Records: "The DJ on this record is Count Sticky, I believe. My copy of that title has an instrumental cut of the same tune on the flip. Both sides are produced by Ranny (Ronny) Williams. I doubt a Perry connection. RKR credits the Hippy Boys..." Midnight Dread says: "All I can go by is the hand-stamp on label and the handwriting on the sleeve which states 'Hippy Boys (?) / Upsetters, Tell Me Tell Me / Excuse Me'. It sounds to me like a Perry produced tune of that era. Bob hasn't heard the vocal side. Still this disc remains a fantastic and fairly rare record, no matter the origin issues."
