The Jam live Toronto 22/5/81 Double Yellow 12"
Rare double 12" - selling from personal collection
The Jam – Toronto Concert Hall, May 22, 1981
A proper little slice of Jam history on this yellow double-12" b00tleg. The Jam played two nights at Toronto's Concert Hall on May 22 and 23, 1981, with Blue Peter supporting, and both shows have circulated as audience recordings. Great Sounding Album
This one captures the first night, and what a gig it was. The Sound Affects era Jam were absolutely flying here — still carrying plenty of the old punk urgency, but with Weller's songwriting and the band's musicianship getting sharper and more adventurous by the minute.
The set is a beauty: “But I'm Different Now,” “Boy About Town,” “Monday,” “Funeral Pyre,” “Pretty Green,” “Private Hell,” “The Butterfly Collector,” “Set the House Ablaze,” “Start!” and plenty more.
But the real treat is “Get Yourself Together” — the Small Faces cover dropped into the set like a lit firework. It's fast, scrappy and gloriously punky, with none of the polished restraint that would increasingly creep into the band's live sound. In fact, Toronto was the first known Jam performance of the song, and it remained a relatively rare choice in their set.
And that's really the charm of this recording: it's The Jam caught in that brilliant in-between moment. Sound Affects had made them bigger and more sophisticated, but they hadn't lost the ability to sound like they might kick the door off its hinges at any second. By the 1982 shows, the presentation was becoming bigger, tighter and more arranged; here, there's still plenty of sweat on the walls.
The second Toronto night is also available as a double 12", making the two records a rather splendid pair for anyone who likes their Jam live, loud and slightly rough around the edges.
Great gig, great set, great era — and that yellow cut doesn't hurt either.
A b00tleg for people who prefer their Jam with a little bit of danger still hanging in the air.
