Description
This album was made for a ballet company in DC, 1970. Ballet like the dance, Capital Ballet company for those who want to deep dive it. It was recorded in the National Collection of Fine Arts, not a studio - more like a museum.
I don’t believe anyone can a) lead a band as a flautist quite like McNeill can, and b) blend fusion-y elements with Latin rhythms and package it all into a pure spiritual jazz experience. This dude is one of the most unique figures in the rich history of jazz music.
When he was through composing, producing, and flute playing; he became a teacher at a university that I can’t recall (google will recall), and got serious about painting. Artwork, not houses or walls (not discrediting that work at all - it can also be art). So much so that, Pablo Picasso admired his work and the two became friends. Like actual homies - Lloyd McNeill and Pablo Picasso. I’m not creative enough to make that up.
If that’s not enough for you, just listen to the first 30 seconds of this album to get the vibe. The tone is set with a driving drum and bass groove that McNeill starts peppering with some of the most catchy flute melodies I’ve personally heard. Not to kill the word but his flute sounds spiritual and uplifting.
Pressed on Oxblood red vinyl 51 years after its original release. Fine art.
