Description
A couple of years ago, one of Australia's most respected and most eloquent music writers passed away - he was active all throughout the 80's and 90's, and to a lesser extent, right up until recently. His credibility was perhaps best illustrated by the high reverence in which he was held by his journalistic peers, and especially by the absolute cream of Australia's musicians - members of Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil, Radio Birdman, Sports, Angels, and many many others counted him as an ally (itself rare in the too often isolationist world he inhabited)...and he had a flurry of loyal readers too...all of whom, it's my guess, would have felt a loop of sadness at the thought his indepth and articulate, impassioned appraisals would no longer be forthcoming.
Just recently I was offered to buy his record collection, which I did, feeling pretty honoured to do so...and here then, is one of the items from that collection:
ARTIST: The MONKEES
TITLE: "VOLUME 1" .
TRACKS: (Theme From) The Monkees (Boyce-Hart) / Saturday's Child (Gates) /// Tomorrow's Gonna Be Another Day (Boyce-Venet) / Take A Giant Step (Goffin-King) .
FORMAT: …vinyl 7" EP…
LABEL: RCA (made and distributed here by RCA Of Australia Pty. Ltd.) .
CATALOGUE #: 20414 .
DATE OF RELEASE: 1967 .
PRESSED IN: AUSTRALIA
ORIGINAL FIRST PRESSING?: Yes, it is...thin matt flipback cover (with light laminate), and on black and silver labels with RCA logo in black within small silver circle (= first press)...
Matrix Numbers:
SIDE ONE: UPKB-0041* A1 A2
SIDE TWO: UPKB-0042* A1B 1C
The first of several Monkees EP releases unique to Australia.
This EP, which was subtitled "(Theme From) The Monkees", actually made number one in the charts, and collects songs from the first side of the first, self-titled Monkees LP.
Of note on the record label writing credits for "Take A Giant Step", is that the usual (and correct) "Goffin-King" is incorrectly attributed to "King-Goffin".
CONDITION:
COVER: ( EX- )...because of thin card used, this was hugely susceptible to ringwear and tearing, and other damage, but this one has lasted beautifully...has NO ringwear on the front and virtually none on the back (just the slightest hint)...does have some light scuffing 'tears' on the front, at lower left, and just level with Mike's feet on his barrel...but they're not drastic at all (see pix)...beautiful copy...
RECORD: ( EX- )...just has a few very light 'hair-line' marks/scuffs only...looks SO shiny...again, very beautifully preserved copy...
LABELS: (Side One: MINT / Side Two: M- )...
If you have any concerns about the accuracy of my gradings, please check my feedback for the odd nice comment from some satisfied folk out there.... (and hopefully you may be able to join their ranks). Thanks for considering this item...Cheers, Jules.
