Description
There was an article ( now remembered as an incredibly famous satire and successfully done hoax) in Rolling Stone Magazine's October 18th, 1969 issue. The article was a fictional review and tongue-in-cheek review of a non-existent album recording of a "super session" featuring some of the era's most important and famous musicians. The author of the article was apparently a "T.M. Christian". This was a humorous reference to the true author of "The Magic Christian." Those musicians described as having partaken in this session included John Lennon, Paul McCartney(The Beatles), Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. Many people who read the article were firmly convinced (or at the minimum strongly intrigued) that this was possibly an incredibly true happening and that these recordings must be incredibly valuable. A good part of the world was convinced that this was something very special and did not know at that point that this was an elaborate hoax concocted by Rolling Stone Magazine.
This disc is the original vinyl release pressing of the "notorious hoax" lp that was released shortly after this articles had received a tremendous amount of attention and buzz by Reprise Records in the fall of 1969. The album was produced by Al Kooper. It was a rare effort of a continuation of the hoax, an actual real album that was apparently of this session. So many people were intrigued that this album went on to sell many copies and even reached as high as 114 on the Billboard charts. There is no reference to the iconic musicians rumored to be on this album. The record jacket notes that this album was a "once in a lifetime" event and also jokingly added "...unfortunately, the musicians on this record must remain anonymous." They also almost give the joke away by explaining at the end of the notes that the music business "is currently 90% hype and 10% bull__."
This pressing is not to be confused with any subsequent re-releases, including the limited edition pressing on Rhino Records released in 2003. This is the original vinyl pressing released in 1969. While I personally did not believe the hoax, or had strong suspicions that it was a satire, I still bought a copy to enjoy the varied musical artist who hilariously imitate the famous rock personalities rumored to be on the album. The entire episode is now one of rock music's most famous stories. The Rolling Stone article and the album itself became a part of rock's "instant mythology", and is now a classic collector's album to own.
This copy has only been sampled for condition and has otherwise not been played.
