Description
The McGUIRE SISTERS sing the complete 1961 Broadway score for SUBWAYS ARE FOR SLEEPING It is rare when a group or singer devotes a whole album to the songs from one Broadway show, but now and then they did. Surprisingly in this instance, the artists were the McGUIRE SISTER, at the time major vocalists on the pop scene,with hits like Sincerely,Sugartime and Something's Gotta Give. Their pop hits began in the mid 1950's and continued into the early sixties, when this show debuted on Broadway. The 1961 "SUBWAYS ARE FOR SLEEPING" had a score by three of Broadways biggest creative names - JULE STYNE, BETTY COMDEN & ADOLPH GREEN, and though it was not a hit when it closed after 205 performances, the songs were often delightful and especially suitable for pop covers were such titles as COMES ONCE IN A LIFETIME, I'M JUST TAKING MY TIME, WHO KNOWS WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN and others. (Composer Jule Styne made no secret of wanting to include songs in his shows that could be hit parade material as well as serve the needs of the show. He was often successful at doing just that.) As was often the case with these kinds of pre-opening cover albums, there are cut songs included...three of them (GETTING MARRIED, NOW I HAVE SOMEONE and WHEN YOU HELP A FRIEND OUT),making this album a collectors item almost instantly. The McGuire Sisters vocals were arranged by MURRAY KANE and the Orchestra and Chorus were under the direction of BURT FARBER. The CORAL record number is CRL 757298. This is a hard to find record, never re-issued, and even more rare, it is a STEREO version, in EXCELLENT to almost like new condition,from my own collection. (There is a small punchhole top right corner of the cover).
