Description
Just as Sire Records was about to hit the map as progenitors of punk and new wave, they were issuing a reissue of Lenny Kaye's incredibly influential Nuggets compilation of proto-punk garage rock, that every kid starting a band was listening to. They also were inspired to create their own anthologies of under-appreciated British garage geniuses--one double LP set on the Troggs that's still indispensible, and this here treatment of The Pretty Things, compiled by Greg Shaw of Bomp Magazine.
If you don't know the group, maybe you remember David Bowie's LP of cover versions, Pinups...Bowie covered TWO Pretty Things songs on there, "Rosalyn" and "Don't Bring Me Down." The hard edge and beautiful sneer on those two numbers? They're homage to the originals. As with the Troggs set, there's a long biographical and discographical essay here that can't be read anyplace else, and will give you all the insight and context you could ever need. Neither of these anthologies ever came out on CD, and hence they don't stream either. This is the way to hear this music, much of which is drawn from rare B-sides and demo stuff.
Anyway, this copy is NM- on the vinyl, actually NM except for a few light clicks on Side 1 cut 3. And the gatefold sleeve is as you see it here, NM-.
