We’re having a bit of a clearout of stuff at home so I’ve put my usual eBay sales of art and ephemera mostly to one side for a few weeks. I’ve got a large personal collection of vinyl, lots of which I don’t play any more, so one of the things I will be selling is records. This is the Pyramids’ (aka Symarip) debut album from 1968. The band was made up of UK-based West Indian musicians. They first recorded – without very much success - as the Bees for the Blue Beat label in 1967. The band is best remembered now for its enduring success with mod and skinhead audiences and their most well known recording is definitely the single Skinhead Mooonstomp, which first came out in 1969 (they are definitely still in the mod phase on the sleeve of this album though). They also recorded for the Doctor Bird, Treasure Isle and Trojan labels.
This is a very fine album - and extremely interesting for its mix of ska, reggae and soul with influences from the British beat music of the period – at times the music sems to predict the sound of bands like the Specials, Selecter and Madness from the ska revival of the 1980s. Several tracks from this album were released as singles, including Train Tour To Rainbow City, All Change On the Bakerloo Line and John Chewey. Some of the tracks were written by Eddie Grant, who also produced the album.
This is a very difficult record to find these days. It was not a great seller at the time. This example is well worth having. The record itself is in extremely good condition with just the lightest of surface marks. The hi-res images above will give you a good sense of the condition of the sleeve and the labels. The labels are in nice condition and have not been written on. The sleeve is a bit bumped and scuffed as you can see but is well within tolerable limits. The back of the sleeve is slightly grubby.
