Over the years, kind of reverence has grown around this album, in part it's due to music but there's also the tale of its creation that adds to the its almost mythical status. The album is a collaboration of sorts between producer Martin Hannett and guitarist Vini Reilly who, it's fair to say wasn't in the best place at the time. Hannett spent most of the time fiddling about with studio equipment, whist Reilly struggled to get out of bed. When he did make it to the studio, he would play snippets on guitar, which Hannett appeared to largely ignore. Stranger still, these sessions were supposedly just an experiment, Reilly apparently had no idea that he was making an album. Then of course, there's the sandpaper sleeve that the original copies came housed in. The result is an album that seems to come from another place. Intricate guitar steeped in reverb and delay and synthesisers come together to form something that doesn't sound like anything else, even now, 45 years later. It's impossible to quantify just how influential this album is. 'First Aspect Of The Same Thing' feel like ground zero for electronic ambient music. The sampled birdsong on 'Sketch For Summer' is ground breaking, whilst the guitar tone seems has been referenced by the likes of John Frusciante and Kevin Shields. After 45 years The Return Of The Durutti Column remains one of the most iconic and unusual records ever released.
