A space trip in a time capsule. The Rolling Stones TSMR is a tribute to excess psyche of the late 60's. This is where Brian Jones started to really lose it. Not to say that there aren't some really brilliant moments here, but everything seems unfinished, under produced and disorganized. This was the first and last attempt from the Stones as a group to self produce. This is where Andrew Loog Oldham dropped the ball, and where, say, Brian could have really stepped up to producing the Stones.They will later self-produce under the Glimmer Twins moniker, but that credit only goes Mick and Keith, and not Bill and Charlie. That happened after Jimmy Miller quit or was fired. The first album under the Glimmer Twins was the 1974 LP "It's Only Rock n Roll. Brian does some amazing flute magic on TSMR, as well as many other instruments as well. Of course Mick and Keith did most of the son writing, except for the first and last entry of a Bill Wyman song, In Another Land. Not bad for a tripped out song. Highlights would include, She's A Rainbow, 2000 Light Years from Home, Citadel, Gomper, and 2000 Man (later covered by Kiss). There is also a musical credit given to the not so famous in 1967, John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) on piano. Nicky Hopkins also does an superb job. Sometimes off key, advent Guard, maybe ahead of it's time, but the Stones fans just didn't get it. There we still waiting for the next Sgt. Pepper, but this is not it. Or, the fans were still groovin' to Satisfaction and Little Red Rooster. Either way the Stones stepped out of their element wand went full steam Psyche. It was the 60's. The other thing that killed the Christmas sales was the title. Anything with "Satanic" as a title could not be wholesome, and the parents did object. Also, not much radio airplay from this disc. It eventually became a cult classic, where hard core fans could never resist. Only five months later the airwaves were jammed with the single, Jumpin' Jack Flash, produced by the R & B man from the States, Jimmy Miller. People soon forgot TSMR, and enjoyed hits like Street Fighting Man, and You Can't Always Get What You Want. Eighteen months later Brian was found dead at the bottom of a swimming pool at his home in England. Mick Taylor energized the band with flawless lead guitar, as Brown Sugar was really 2000 Light Years from TSMR. The album jacket is a master piece of art work. Enough to get you ya ya's out. Sex, Drugs and Rock n Roll was invented by the Stones. This LP is it, but with a sophisticated ethereal twist. There is snippet of someone snoring in the grooves and a whimsical "Merry Christmas" as the end of LP just before the matrix. Be sure and wait for it. It was the "Christmas Message" un-apologetically NON-Beatlesque.
