The Runaways

Right Now / Black Leather

Cherry Red

CHERRY519

Limited edition red 7"

THE RUNAWAYS! They were neon angels on the road to ruin. They loved playing with fire. They loved black leather. And they loved rock and roll.

They originally formed in Los Angeles in 1975, when 16 year old drummer Sandy West met nascent Suzi Quatro acolyte and rhythm guitarist, Joan Jett, before approaching manager, producer, scenester and all-round Svengali figure Kim Fowley. The band was completed by fellow LA teenagers Lita Ford on lead guitar, bassist Jackie Fox and lead singer Cherie Currie.

THE RUNAWAYS! They were neon angels on the road to ruin.

They loved playing with fire. They loved black leather. And

they loved rock and roll.

They originally formed in Los Angeles in 1975, when 16 year

old drummer Sandy West met nascent Suzi Quatro acolyte

and rhythm guitarist, Joan Jett, before approaching

manager, producer, scenester and all-round Svengali figure

Kim Fowley. The band was completed by fellow LA teenagers

Lita Ford on lead guitar, bassist Jackie Fox and fronted by

lead singer Cherie Currie.

Signing to Mercury Records in 1976 for their eponymous

debut, despite their mixture of hard rock and punk meeting

derision from their male rock peers, they became a Beatles-

esque sensation in Japan, resulting in the obligatory

Japanese live album. Second LP “Queens Of Noise” in 1977

certainly cemented their punk credentials, but a row

between Cherie Currie and Lita Ford led the singer to leave

the band for a solo career in 1977, with Joan Jett assuming

the role of lead singer and front-woman.

After cutting a third album for Mercury in 1977, the four-

piece signed to Cherry Red Records in the UK for their fourth

and final LP, “And Now... The Runaways” in 1978. By now

Joan Jett, Lita Ford and Sandy West were joined by bassist

Vicki Blue, whose future accolades would include an

appearance in “This Is Spinal Tap”. Sandy West's sole writing

and lead vocal contribution to the LP, ‘Right Now’, was

chosen as a single, backed by ‘Black Leather’, a song written

by the Sex Pistols’ Steve Jones and Paul Cook. Shortly

afterwards, the band split, with Joan Jett and Lita Ford each

forging successful solo careers.

The band have been subject of two films; the first was a

documentary, “Edgeplay: A Film About the Runaways”, but

their story eventually reached Hollywood with the “The

Runaways” movie in 2010, partly based on Cherie Currie’s

memoir of the band and subsequent career, and starring

Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart.

This rare and hard to find 7” is now reissued in translucent

red vinyl.
