The Smiths - 'Hand In Glove' 3 7"s With Sleeve Variations - 1983-4

What you have here is a chance to bid on three different versions of the first Smiths single 'Hand In Glove'. These are all original Rough Trade releases, and not recent re-issues, but include, as well as the first pressing, slightly later pressings from 1984 when the single had gained popularity. As the world of Smiths collecting continues to grow and mature, the finer details of subtle sleeve variations will increase in significance and some versions will emerge as the rarer and more valuable items amongst collectors. This auction includes the first press which has the Manchester '70, Portland St' address on the reverse of the sleeve and credits the sleeve design to The Smiths. The record itself has a solid centre, a large 'Rough Trade' logo and has a 'Glad Hips Music' credit on the label. Also included is the later pressing which has the London '61-71 Collier Street' address on the sleeve reverse and also credits the sleeve design to The Smiths. The record has a 'push-out' centre (which had not been pushed out!), a smaller 'Rough Trade' logo and no 'Glad Hips Music' credit on the label. Finally there is a third version, believed to be the latest pressing of the three, which also has the London address on the back of the sleeve but, interestingly, has a 'Sleeve by MORRISSEY' credit rather than 'Sleeve by The Smiths' as it says on the other two. Also the 'Endless Gratitude to Joe and Janet' credit has been omitted on this third version. The record itself has reverted to the solid centre format, but is otherwise identical to the design of the 'push out' version of the other 'London address' pressing. An additional bonus is the inclusion of an original press sheet (not a phtocopy) from Rough Trade which is headed "Official Biography, 13 May 1983" and which was used to promote this single. This sheet attempts to describe the essence of the band and their formation, and lists their first six live dates which had happened at that time in Manchester and London. It also lists two future dates at the Electric Ballroom in London and the Leadmill in Sheffield (which I am not sure ever happened). A great opportunity to own these early pressings of the first Smiths single and the accompanying promotional material.

The vinyl and labels are in strong excellent condition (at least) in each case, with no significant marks on the glossy vinyl or labels. The sleeve for the 'Manchester address' version has some mild creasing at the mouth of the sleeve and some mild 'ringwear' on the front, the first 'London address' sleeve has no significant marks or creases whatsoever and the second 'London address' sleeve has some moderate creasing at the mouth of the sleeve and some mild 'indentations' but no other wear or damage. None of the sleeves have any writing, tears, sticker marks or seam splits anywhere. The rare promo sheet has just two neat folds and no other signs of wear or damage, it is in superb condition.
