The Smiths - 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out' USA Promo 12''

This is an extremely rare record (Catalogue No. PRO-A-2571 - Sire) which was released for promotional purposes in anticipation of 'The Queen Is Dead' LP in the USA in 1986. This popular track was released as a single only in France during the time that The Smiths were together, making this promotional pressing particularly prized amongst collectors. Many of the USA promotional 12" releases were issued in plain white 'die-cut' sleeves, but this one came in a picture sleeve which was unusually adapted from the standard 'Queen Is Dead' sleeve at the design stage. It is a lighter shade (almost faded) of green than was used for the 'Queen Is Dead' and you can even see, if you look closely, where the original album title has been masked out to be replaced with the name of the track on the cover (see photo). The back of the sleeve is almost all white, and in the front lower right hand corner it states: "Promotional Copy. Not For Sale."

The appearance of the sleeve makes for a slightly strange variation if you are used to seeing the standard album sleeve. In 1992 it was placed at Number 11 (above the French 7" release!) in Record Collector's Smiths Top 100 collectables list, and then at Number 39 in the 2005 version of the list as various test pressings were introduced to the list in the top placings. Regardless of its ranking, this is a genuine Smiths rarity which is not often seen for sale and is in terrific condition (see below).

This copy has been very well preserved. The vinyl is in excellent condition, possibly played once for it has just one or two of the lightest 'hairline' superficial surface marks. The outer sleeve is in very good condition, with just some very mild shelf wear, but nothing to spoil the overall appearance. There is mild cornerwear and light 'ringwear' which has just left an impression due to the vinyl inside but no marks or rubbing to the sleeve as a consequence. Overall a very fine example of this rare item.
