The Stone Roses Nippon Budokan soundcheck 12" Rare Copper Single 12" Selling from personal collection
The Copper 12-inch Nippon Budokan soundcheck BL has become a genuine cult favourite among later-era Stone Roses collectors because it captures the band in a completely different mood from the polished live shows. Recorded direct from the soundboard during the April 2017 soundcheck in Tokyo, the bootleg circulated in tiny numbers on unofficial green vinyl alongside various CDR and digital versions, and fans quickly became obsessed with the atmosphere of the sessions. You can even hear the idle chatter between songs, including Ian Brown threatening to pull that night’s and the following night’s gigs. Instead of a tightly controlled stadium performance, the recordings feel loose, playful and unpredictable, Ian Brown warming up with “Black Roses,” “Waterfall / Don’t Stop” sounding locked-in and confident, a storming “Begging You,” “Bye Bye Badman” with one of Brown’s strongest vocals of the reunion years, and the hypnotic Reni/Mani jams stretching out into near-psychedelic grooves.

The standout moment for many collectors is the chaotic “Fools Gold” outro, where Reni drifts into vocal duties in his own brilliantly off-kilter way while the band keep the groove rolling underneath him. Part of the fascination comes from the fact that “Black Roses” later appeared on Ian Brown’s solo album Ripples, which immediately led fans to wonder whether it had briefly been considered for a full Stone Roses treatment. The Copper cut  itself is now semi-mythical among collectors due to its tiny pressing numbers, but its reputation has very little to do with audio perfection — people love it because it sounds like the real Stone Roses: relaxed, funny, slightly chaotic and occasionally absolutely magic.
