Description
The Stranglers Withdrawn Peaches Blackmail Sleeve Genuine Verified 1977 Copy Original Punk. Condition is Used. Dispatched with Royal Mail 1st Class. Special delivery Signed for.
OK, here it is! This is the infamous cover that started the “are there lines on the originals?” debate. This IS one of the genuine 1977 original, printing error, “lined” sleeves, with the lines on the rear LH folded flap.
The original design did not have these lines as part of the design. Most surviving copies have plain LH flaps on the rear.
During the printing, some contamination occurred during the process resulting in these unintended stripes on some copies.
This copy passed through inspection with the error.
This copy was not destroyed when the band rejected the design, not approving of either the “Blackmail” lettering design, or the band picture.
I listed this a few weeks ago, and then I subsequently took down the listing, due to some “controversy” on the definitive Stranglers collectors forum, over whether or not original genuine 1977 blackmail sleeves had the 2 stripes on the rear LH folded flap as seen on this item in the pictures.
The issue was clarified. This sleeve was verified as a genuine 1977 item. The question over why some originals had lines, whilst some originals did not, was resolved.
Plain and simple, some had printing error lines on the LH rear flap, some did not.

This is the 4th 1977 Blackmail sleeve I’ve owned. The first two, I bought from directly from a United Artist employee. I know what they look, smell and feel like. This one for sale here is the real deal.
There is no need for me to say that this has all of the markers for a genuine sleeve, the paper, the die cut, the exact dimensions, the ink, printing process, the smell, etc, as per the verification videos that were made and subsequently uploaded to the definitive Facebook Stranglers Memorabilia site. There is no need to confirm these details as this IS the sleeve featured in this very informative series of videos.
This is the 100% guaranteed verified, 1977 original. The benchmark sleeve, from which 1977 sleeve verifications will be made.
So OK, in the flesh, this is truly a lovely item. The pictures do not do it justice. It’s a survivor. It’s seen some action. Please check the images closely as they form part of the description. It has the biro graffiti on the back. Also, as part of the proof of originality investigations, the RH rear flap, which was just about to “let go” anyway, was carefully unstuck to reveal the correct vintage printing layout for these sleeves. This could easily be re-stuck, but I’ll leave that decision to the new owner. I had it framed with a Free 4 and it looked stunning on display.
Your chance to own the now legendary, infamous copy, of this legendary withdrawn infamous sought after sleeves.
