Description
Here for auction is a very rare 1980 white label copy of The Teardrop Explodes’ debut LP KILIMANJARO, released on the Polygram Records label. This item features an entirely different list of songs from the UK version, and each will be listed below in detail.
The disc comes from the personal archive of singer/author Julian Cope, who was sent this for approval before its manufacture was authorised. The U.S. company chose to re-jig the UK tracklisting, actually substituting ‘Suffocate’ in place of the UK single ‘Bouncing Babies’. The disc has been played through and sounds superb, despite a slight warp which does not affect the record’s playing.
SIDE ONE
1. Ha Ha I’m Drowning
This is the same as UK version. The song itself is clean.
2. Treason
This is the same as the UK version. The song is clean.
3. Suffocate
An entirely different version to the UK release on the final Teardrop double-E.P., this features no orchestration and is an earlier recording. Clean, save for one pop midway through.
4. Reward
Earlier version of the UK hit single, which was re-mixed by Julian Cope and Bill Drummond. This mix was the original made by producer Clive Langer, and features Alan Gill’s electric guitar – replaced on the 45 mix. The song is clean.
5. When I Dream
This is the same as the UK single version, shorter than the UK album release. The song is clean.
SIDE TWO
1. Went Crazy
Earlier mix featuring Mick Finkler’s complete concert riff, as opposed to the halved version employed on the UK album. Exhibits some surface noise at the front, also two pops and one jump.
2. Brave Boys Keep Their Promises
This is the UK album version. Exhibits some surface noise and one pop.
3. Sleeping Gas
This is the UK album version. Exhibits one pop in the latter moments of the song.
4. Books
This is the UK album version. One jump early on.
5. Thief Of Baghdad
This is the UK album version. One small pop.
6. Poppies In The Field
This is the UK album version. The song is clean.
