Welcome to our ( further continued!) Winter Special 2026 "Gigantic" Jazz-Funk, Soul Jazz, Spiritual, Fusion, Private Press, Part 3.The main focus is jazz-funk, spiritual jazz, fusion, soul-jazz, rare groove lp's, largely from the late 1960's-1970's into the early 80's, all originals, no reissues! WE COMBINE SHIPPING! :)

This week features part III, there was so much we just didn't have the time to properly list in the first two auctions, (there also will be a Part IV later in Spring, of curated grail pieces!), this one has a lot of amazing rare jazz-fusion, heavy jazz-funk, cinematic library style jazz-funk rare groove, the funkiest instrumental jazz-rock, leftfield electronic jazz, rare private presses, spiritual jazz/avant and tons of open drum breaks! Beginning with quickly rising to grail status Sam Morrison - Natural Layers 1977 Chiaroscuro record on to  albums like Gil Scott-Heron's 1977 masterpiece "Bridges" on Arista, numerous MPS records from George Duke, to Rhythm Combination, and Csaba Deseo, an extremely rare unknown jazz-fusion private press by Rob Dame (No, not the known "November"!), a large # of lp's from the ECM label, Jan Hammer's hype rare 1977 "Melodies" (Peep David Earle Johnson's "Time Is Free" 1977 Vanguard lp if you dig that one!), sureshots like Lonnie Liston Smith's "Expansions", Mike Longo's "900 Shares Of The Blues" on Groove Merchant, the 1st press 1974 Impulse! Media Grade:  VG+ (light sleeve scuffs under bright light, a fantastic player copy, very conservative grade, peep the soundclips!)
Sleeve Grade:  VG- (top seam is split, less than one inch split on bottom seam, ringwear, overall not a horrible one by any means, see photos!)

Brief Comments: One of the most mighty soul-jazz, jazz-funk albums of Blue Note's catalogue, Soul Symphony is arranged, conducted, and written by Monk Higgins! The venerable legendary Henry Franklin is on bass, with Freddie Robinson's soulful guitar, the occasional background voices include Alex Brown, and Clydie King....All original matierial needless to say, a sort of conceptual (mainly) instrumental album (the linear notes are fantastic, giving info on all of it!), the entire A-Side is one long suite, entitled "Soul Symphony", clocking in at 26:05! It doesn't feel a second too long, the changeups are brilliant, everything as deftly played as the composition is literal, it is a Soul Symphony, no gimmicks, no put-ons, it's Monk Higgins writing his masterpiece (I love him, his work, I've had near everything he's done, except the 1970 Alex Brown grail on Sundi, but a dear friend has that as a grail piece, and made me a high-quality rip, so I have a CD burned copy of it!), and I think Monk Higgins truly does some of his finest work, not just on that side long cut, but the entire album. Of course my Main Source "Breakin' Atoms" fans, know B1 "Repeat After Me", the sample for Vamos Rapier (the only track not produced by Large Professor, who invited his good friend Pete Rock to contribute that one!), the whole lp is more stacked than the Yankees prior to introducing a mandatory salary cap! Black Sugar, Popsicle Pimp, Upper Four Hundred, It's hard to pick out any favorite, because the whole album is a favorite (being the hip-hop head I am, and really wanting to put an example forth, I knew I had to do "Repeat After Me"). 
I got this one years ago, early on, a real come up, in 2012, I didn't know this was the 3 Sounds lp with the Main Source sample when I got it, all I knew was Monk Higgins, and that artwork, track list, it's too dope, for this to disappoint (this particular record store was in between  "listening stations", it was like a good two month period...), I got home, put it on, but in backwards order (I think I'm used to records tending to have the longest suite, usually on the B-Side?), so "Repeat After Me" plays first, and "boom"! I was stunned, I'm like I know this, I think it's Main Source, so I looked it up, as the record played, and sho' nuff.... I remember writing in a little notebook (I'm glad I kept all of these over the years!) just for writing down sample ideas, whenever I'd come across an open drum break, a loop (If it was a "famous" sample, like this, I'd just note "Don't use B1" haha, I wanted to be original!), I have notebooks where it says "about 1/3rd to 1/4th in, Fender Rhodes, changeup", or "Approx. 7/8th in, bassline, open", often in terrible scrawled frantic writing...the amazing thing is, I don't really need to consult them much, because just writing it down, helped keep it in mind, it's funny, I wish I had made as many beats, as I did a fraction of laying the groundwork for.... 
Anyhow, this one is mega rare (Gene Harris felt a little snubbed, and he was on Blue Note's roster, Monk Higgins wasn't, but he also would produce Blue Mitchell's killer 1969 "Bantu Village" on Blue Note!), you rarely see it, even online most are VG or lower on the scale, finding one that is in decent shape is a hard wait, (I say that, because, and I've fallen to this myself y'all, go to Discogs page, see X copies, beginning at $5, and think pfffff, not anymore, but long long ago *I missed out on a Terry Callier - Occasional Rain this way, I still have this etched in my head! Click it, and yeah a $5 copy with no cover, in G condition, with anthrax coating the labels, then next up, G+ vinyl / VG cover (a cover split, torn, ripped, covered in sharpie explicit language, barbed wire) for $35, then going "Daaaayyuuuum", $75 for VG/VG, finally crossing into what it may look to get a decent copy, (first, going Ok, $90, but it ships from East Macedonia, a warning it will have to travel by small carrier mammal through roughly 2 warzones, and shipping will cost as much as your first car), then alright, so $125 for VG+/VG+, for example....now the cover is VG- on this, it had been on the verge when I first bought it, but didn't have the split, one time I put it in, just wrong, and "rippppp", I didn't want to tape it, I always kept it in a plastic outer, it presented cool like that, It could be done, there's a few more intricate (but inexpensive) methods of repairing this kind of split, and if you go that route? Just send a photo of the receipt for the glue, cotton balls, I'll def send a partial refund for that!  The disc is clean, it's a nice VG+, been my player, recently re-evaluated to be extra careful, I'd have called it EX, but I'd rather someone get an lp in better shape then they thought, and not the other way around!

*Tariffs aren't going to impact used vinyl records / music media, we wish they were never in place at all, so for international buyers, don't worry on that account!
For our record grading, we stand by the merits outlined in the scale below, anything VG or below will have a detailed explanation in brackets next to the grade.
For sleeves, we will mention anytime there is split, or defect not visible in the photos in brackets next to the grade, otherwise we refer to the photos for the merit of the grade. Of course any questions, concerns, are always welcome :) 
Our media grading scale is as follows: [*Quick note, our VPI is still in storage on the other side of the US, we do brush clean many  items carefully, but we have to prioritize, we won't leave anyone stranded with a filthy record, only "filthy" good! We don't factor dust particles into the grading]
NM = Essentially a pristine album, like new, rarely used.
EX = Under bright light if there is any scuffs or mark, which will be inaudible, most collectors and sellers would tend to consider it closer to NM, EX is also the grade others might call VG++ under the same level of conservative scrutiny.
VG+ = More then a small handful of scuffs, light marks, nothing feelable, will have high-gloss, a thoroughly enjoyable copy that may only have tiny moments of barely perceptible surface noise overpowered by the music. Our VG+ will satisfy the vast majority of collectors as a nice keeper copy, as collector's ourselves for nearly two decades, this grade is aimed to be a great keeper. Note if say the record has a light DNAP warp, but otherwise is NM, we will automatically put it to VG+ and detail that. Another scenario is if a copy plays at a solid EX, but visually is VG, the composite grade will be VG+, and detailed as such.
VG = More hairlines, more marks, maybe a few visible scratches, no more then two feelable scratches (which automatically lowers to VG-), there likely will be surface noise, but will play through, still being an enjoyable copy, the audio quality will satisfy most collector's (the golden rule: if it doesn't satisfy us, it won't be VG), if a record is otherwise EX, but has a slight momentary skip, where 99% of the record is EX, we will note that, and put it at VG. Usually will retain a nice gloss.
VG- = More Scratches than VG, surface noise will jump out more, it be overpowered for longer stretches, or compete with the music in places, it will likely play all the way through on most turntables, a copy that you can still get a decent play enjoyment from.
G+ = Lots of scratches, deeper ones, surface noise now mostly overpowers or competes with the music. It may skip in some places. We don't tend to sell G+ copies, unless the rarity is so great, and that will be precisely detailed.
Thrashed = Pretty much a "Theoretical Grade" for us, it be for all intents & purposes virtually unplayable, it would be for display purposes, or perhaps if you needed the cover but not the record. It's "theoretical" because so far we haven't sold or identified anything intended to sell at this bottom level.

We have it set to 5 day shipping / handling time, as a just in case, typically about 98.7% of our orders are shipped out the day of payment (first day the post office is open), with the vast majority being the second day. We'll message on the extraordinary off-chance if doesn't go out on Tuesday (our auctions mostly ending on Saturdays, Sundays), with the reason and day it will go out, so far that's only happened once on a giant order, and all was well.
