Description

  • Artist & Title: Richard Bales - The Union & The Confederacy 1861-1865
  • Label & Cat #: Columbia Records Legacy Collection - LS 1006 & LS 1003
  • Vinyl Grade:  Very Good Plus (VG+) play graded *Both records are in beautiful condition and play wonderful with barely any noise interference. The vinyl itself is glossy and the only visible marks is on Side 1 of The Confederacy album with a long superficial spindle mark across all tracks that fortunately did not adversely affect play. The Union album had 4 soft ticks on the last track of Side 1.
  • Cover Grade: Excellent (EX) *both album covers are in beautiful Near Perfect shape with just the slightest of wear at the spine seam corners. I would classify the illustrated and annotated pages within each as perfect!
  • Notes: This highly prized recording was originally released in 1964, as part of the activities commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Civil War. Explore the rich tapestry of American history with "The Union & The Confederacy 1861-1865," a compelling two-book and record set by Richard Bales. Immerse yourself in the military music of the era. This collection, released in the 1960s by Columbia Records Legacy Collection, features classical, brass, and military genres that faithfully capture the spirit of the time. Accompanying the record is a cardboard sleeve that houses the two books, rich with historical detail and insights (60 pages for The Union and 32 pages for The Confederacy, both annotated by no less a figure than historian Bruce Catton). The Union album includes a 3-page fold-out as seen in photos.

GRADING STANDARDS:

(M) Mint: Record and cover appear absolutely perfect in every way.  Grade is seldom used, even with sealed albums where the record itself can only be assumed to be mint.

(NM) Near Mint: Vinyl is shiny with no obvious signs of wear and plays perfectly with no audible imperfections. Cover is close to perfect with minor signs of wear or age just becoming evident.

(EX or VG++) Excellent /Very Good ++: Record or jacket has a minimum of audible or visual imperfections. Vinyl has been handled and played very carefully. Light paper scuffs and/or spindle marks may be visible with no appreciable lessening in sound quality. Covers show very minor signs of handling and wear.

(VG+) Very Good Plus: Record displays light scuffs, spindle marks or very light scratches that may create some noise disturbances, but don't affect one's overall listening experience. Jacket begins to show more prominent signs of storage wear and aging.

(VG) Very Good: Defects are more pronounced with visible signs of handling and playing. Surface noise is evident upon playing, especially during soft passages and a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Covers may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached, although none of the flaws should be overwhelming.

(G) Good / (G+)Good Plus: Vinyl will have scratches and visible groove wear. Record plays without skipping, although noticeable surface noise or ticks will be heard. Jackets have even more pronounced defects such as seam splits, tape, writing, ring wear, water damage or other defects.
