This is an exceptional 1st pressing of TOMMY in very clean condition, that plays great from start to finish.   You will be very hard pressed to find a TRACK press that plays with such power and clarity!

Tommy is the fourth studio album by The Who. It was first released in the United Kingdom by Track Records on 23 May 1969. On 31 May, the album was released in the United States by Decca Records. Tommy was mostly composed by the band's guitarist Pete Townshend as a double album that tells the story about a "deaf, dumb and blind kid". The album was the first musical work to be billed overtly as a rock opera.

Tommy was acclaimed upon its release by critics, who hailed it as the Who's breakthrough, It has been viewed as a major and massively influential rock album. In 1998, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for "historical, artistic and significant value". Tommy has sold over 20 million copies worldwide.

When it was released some critics thought the album was a masterpiece, the beginnings of a new genre. The album was banned by the BBC and certain US radio stations. Ultimately, the album became a commercial success, as did The Who's frequent live performances of the rock opera in the following years, elevating them to a new level of prestige and international stardom.

ALBUM PLAYED FOR AUDIO GRADING: Yes – brilliant sound quality throughout!

TOMMY is a challenging record and a very difficult vinyl to find with great audio. Genuine 1st pressings are extremely rare and were prone to heavy surface sound. The 1st pressings are very rare in themselves, being produced in a very small run, but they are virtually impossible to find with top audio. 

This is a stunning example that plays with top audio. This great record plays up to the high visual grading and beyond. It plays with incredibly Powerful and clear sound, with no groove wear or blurring of the sound separation; incredibly rare on an original 1st Ever pressing! 

Strong, undistorted sound free of any loud pops or clicks. Channels are clean and unstressed. The record plays with staggering power, with a minimum of surface sound during the tracks.

Great audio with minimal interference to distract form the overly enjoyment of this great record, and only light surface or static noise between the tracks. I will give a detailed account below:

Side 1. starts with crystal clear audio. Nice clean run ins there is barely any surface sound. Barely any detectable light static at the start. Moving into the wonderful 'Its A Boy', the audio demonstrates The Who's incredible subtle production layering, with notes and effects that are usually lost on most even relatively played vinyls. Here the audio sings out with amazing clarity. 

'1921' and 'Amazing Journey' both sound fantastic, with no pops or clicks, and barely any surface sound detectable. I heard one pop, and that was the only one on the whole side. 'Sparks' and the 'Hawker' maintain the same high standard, with incredible clear sound. For such a varied album this is just an awesome audio performance. No repeating pops or clicks and barely any background static at all. The music is just incredibly bright and sharp. It would be very hard to find a clearer pressing. 

Side 2. starts out with 'Christmas' which plays with some light static in the run ins and quiet areas, but nothing that noticeable. The sound really is brilliant and clear. Great music with great clarity, and so hard to find with this type of sound. No loud pops or clicks during the music, and not a hint of distortion. In fact I may as well confirm now that there is not a hint of distortion anywhere on this great vinyl.  'Cousin Kevin' plays with super clear sound, and the heavily layered quiet instrumental section , sounds great. A few light static tics but they're are barely noticeable. 'The Acid Queen' bursts in with simply awesome sound. No noticeable sound blemishes, just great clear sound. 'Underture' rounds off side 2. with great clear audio. The long instrumental sections are so clear and sharp, barely a hint of surface sound. Superb clear bright sound, amazing. 

Side 3. begins with 'Do You Think Its all Right'. The delicate areas sounds incredible. The audio is just superb, with barely any audible static and Crystal clear vocal layering. No obvious sound interference at all. 'Fiddle About' and 'Pinball Wizard' play with amazing sound. The vocals sing out, with great clarity. This variable album is nearly always blighted with loud pops, clicks, buzzing crackle and distortion, but not here. There is some very light static at the very start of 'PinBall Wizard' only. 'Theres a Doctor' , 'Go To The Mirror' both play brilliantly and lead to the incredible 'Tommy Can You Hear Me'. Barely a pop or click to be heard, there are a few light static tics, but nothing obtrusive, just stunning clear audio. Superb clear sound.  No pops or clicks, just truly incredible super bright clear audio. The side rounds off with 'Smash the Mirror' and 'Sensation', which both sound great. No loud pops or clicks and very little noticeable surface sounds at all. Fantastic!

Side 4. begins with 'Miracle Cure'. This brief delicate track sounds brilliant. A bit of static at the start and then the audio plays with barely any audible static and crystal clear vocal layering. 'Sally Simpson' and 'Im Free' sound fantastic. The vocals sing out, with great clarity. This variable album is nearly always blighted with loud pops, clicks, buzzing crackle and distortion, but not here. No pops or clicks at all, and barley any surface sound. Superb clear sound.  No pops or clicks, just truly incredible super bright clear audio. 'Welcome' and 'Tommy's Holiday Camp' both play brilliantly and lead to the climax 'We're Not Going to Take It'. Barely a light static tic to be heard, just stunning clear audio. Fantastic! At the very end of the track there is a light repeating click, about six in total, leading into the run in grooves, but thast the only obvious click during the entire album. 

All the way through the vinyl plays with incredible definition. A total lack of loud pops, clicks, obvious interference, and certainly no distortion anywhere on this great record, makes this a truly incredible collectable press of this ultimate rarity. The music jumps out, with definition and clarity, the vocals come through with tremendous power. Its the same with the bass guitar and drums, whilst the guitars multi layers come through crisp and clear. The tonal quality and incredible lack of any surface sound make this a sensational pressing. With the clear and extra loud First cut engineering giving the audio a vibrant sound which cannot be beaten.

A great all round example of this great  vinyl. Easily graded EXCELLENT to NEAR MINT. 

A staggering first stereo mix, the record plays with incredible dept and definition, unlike the re-issues which lack the impact.    

THE LABELS 

Both labels are in great condition with no marks or writing, and no discernible spindle wear. There are some spindle traces to be found on each side. Great all round deep coloured examples, wonderful!

Easily graded EXCELLENT to NEAR MINT.

THE RECORD – VISUAL GRADING  

A superb set of glossy vinyls, and really thick pressings. Deep clear grooves that can only be found on the original early pressings. On initial inspection the vinyl the vinyls look great but do show a number of light handling marks, hairlines and a few small very light scratches. Nothing that affect the audio though. 

A really wonderful example of this rare set. Strictly grades at EXCELLENT.

Yes, NONE visible what so ever when tested be sight and on a moving turntable.        

THE COVER

This is a great example of this Ultra Rare 1st press cover. These three fold laminated covers usually faired pretty badly, with serious ring wear and destruction to the edges. The Spines are nearly always flattened, worn and un readable. Not this one!

There is some light scuffing to the corners, and some light rubbing along the edges. The opening edges are very square and un frayed.  The back cover is nice and clean, with very little ring wear, which is very unusual for these delicate covers.

The Spine is an unusually square example, with some light wear only, with the spine text is intact. 

A great example. All round, this is a really nice original cover. Easily grades at EXCELLENT condition!!!   

THE INNER

A great condition set, original white poly lined inner sleeves. NO small tears around the die cut opening, NO splits to the seams, and NO wear at the tops. Crisp and Clean, with no splits, and no writing. A great set. Some general light handling wear and light creasing only. 

Strictly graded at VERY GOOD PLUS to EXCELLENT.

THE NUMBERED LYRIC BOOKLET INSERT

A great condition numbered example. NO small tears, NO splits to the seams, and NO wear at the tops. Crisp and Clean, with no splits, and no writing. Some general light handling wear, a bit of slight discolouration, a few small marks hear and light creasing only. Strictly graded at VERY GOOD PLUS to EXCELLENT.

RARITY

A 1st pressing of TOMMY in any type of condition is scarce. The vinyl is so often played so much, heavily marked, scratched, with noisy, poor and distorted sound. And these 1st pressings were produced in a very small run. Any EARLY UK PRESS examples with a record in this type of condition, that plays with TOP AUDIO is an ultimate rarity, let alone a 1st pressing.

The cover is almost impossible to find without serious wear, even modestly worn examples are scarce and this one is one of the better examples. Finding a great laminated cover like this, with a stunning piece of vinyl, original inner sleeves and Numbered booklet makes this a genuine rarity, fantastic!.

VINYL SOUND - PLEASE NOTE:

The highest quality vinyl with clear sound is rare, and is what I always aim for. I only sell records that play with TOP AUDIO performance, super clear sound uninterrupted by hiss or other interference. Even with the cleanest copies you will find occasional static sound or occasional light tics during playback, caused by a build of dust in the grooves. This is clearly different from the distortion, loud pops, repeating tics or clicks that are found on heavily played and worn pieces of vinyl. Any static build up will reduce when played, and I advise a light clean should be given between plays for optimal performance.

MY RECORD GRADING SYSTEM IS AS FOLLOWS - (BASED ON RECORD COLLECTOR MAGAZINE U.K. )

MINT: Virtually unplayed. The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. Cover is pristine.

EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

V.G PLUS: The record will still be nice and shiny, but may have a few light marks, and will play well. Slight wear and tear on the cover.

V.G: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items.

GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, etc.

FAIR: Fair. It is noticeable that the record has been played so much that the sound quality has deteriorated very noticeably. The cover and contents are showing signs of folding, scuffing of edges etc.
