There are two singles in this listing but the second one, A Legal Matter, is really just a freebie because it is not in very good condition. The listing is primarilly of The Last Time, which is one of the hardest to find of the Who’s 1960s releases – it made only number 44 in the UK charts during a period when other Who releases consistently made the Top Ten.

I guess most people will know that this single – with Rolling Stones songs on both sides - was recorded by the Who as a gesture of solidarity with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, who were arrested and briefly jailed in 1967 for the possession of drugs (following the infamous “Redlands drug bust”). The day after the jailing, the Who took out press ads announcing that they would be recording a “series of Jagger/Richard songs to keep their work before the public until they are again free to record themselves”. The Last Time was the first of the intended series, rush-released immediately after the trial -  but as Mick and Keith were later freed on appeal no others were recorded.

This is not the best copy you will ever see but it plays decently and is well within acceptable limits I would say for most people. It has quite a lot of marks to the playing surfaces but none is bad enough cause any intrusive pops or clicks. There is the a bit of light crackling here and there if you listen hard but both sides are loud, raucous tracks so this is not really a problem. The record comes in a new white sleeve and the labels are in nice clean condition. The labels both carry the text “In support of Mick Jagger & Keith Richard”

A Legal Matter b/w Instant Party

This is another record slightly out of the mainstream of Who recordings. The release of A Legal Matter was authorised by the Who’s former producer Shel Talmy without the permission of the band. It was released only a couple of weeks after the release of Substitute on the Who’s new label, Reaction, and is regarded as a deliberate attempt to undermine that record. If so, it failed in that intention. Substitute reached number five in the UK charts. A Legal Matter peaked at 32. Because it was not such a big seller, copies of A Legal Matter are a bit harder to find these days than other Who singles. Just to reiterate though, this is not a good example. It plays all the way through on my turntable but is badly marked and scuffed, and has audible crackles, pops and clicks. I'm including it only because I have two copies so this is a spare. It is suitable only really as a place-filler in your collection until you find a better copy. It should be regarded strictly as a free gift with the other record here. If you look at it that way, you won’t be disappointed and can just throw it away if you find it too poor. It comes in its original Brunswick sleeve.
