Young Man Blues/Substitute - 45 / 7"
Decca (USA) - stereoOffering one 1970 45 rpm promo 7" single with picture sleeve by the English Rock group, The Who. The two songs, "Young Man Blues" (listed only as "Young Man" on the disc label), and "Substitute", were recorded live as part of the "Live At Leeds" album. Fans of The Who know this album as a smoking hot performance that perfectly captured the incendiary nature of the band. Decca USA released only one other single from the album, "Summertime Blues". That song went to #27 Pop in the USA. "Young Man Blues" would seem to have been a great choice for a single release. It was a brilliant cover of an old Mose Allison tune, crackling with energy, that completely remade the original. Decca may have released this single as a follow-up to "Summertime" a bit too soon as it failed to sell and few copies were made. For this reason, even non-promo 'stock' copies of this single are quite rare. Stock copies, however, did NOT come with a picture sleeve. Only the yellow label promo copies from US Decca came with the picture sleeve, and these are scare as hen's teeth. For these very good reasons this item is listed as one of The Who's rarest collectibles.
The light brown/tan picture sleeve mimics the "Live At Leeds" album cover on the front. Back cover has text from Life Magazine hyping the group. One more great feature of this disc is that it is an early stereo 45 that plays with rich sound.
Picture sleeve condition is as follows. Sleeve is clean with slight wear. We regret to say, however, that it seems to have been exposed to a little moisture at some point, resulting in some water damage. So while the sleeve surface is clean and crisp with just a little minor creasing around the edges, the sleeve surface is rippled and the disc outline can be seen in the ripple pattern. (We're sorry-we have been unable to get this to show up in a scan) It's a little hard to grade the sleeve, but we are going to give it a VG+.
Disc (yellow promo label with black print) is clean, glossy, and MINT. We obtained this disc many years ago in unplayed condition from a radio station collection. It has only been played a few times since then. Disc plays clean with only very minor surface noise and clear sound.
