The Wind Harp: Song From The Hill

United Artists UAS-9963 USA 1972 2LP Vinyl: both vg+ (minor scuffs)
Cover: ex (small writing on front) Great recording of gorgeous droning microtonal soundscapes produced by a giant wind-activated sound sculpture (an aeolian harp). The sculpture itself is of mysterious authorship (according to Wikipedia it was built by an anonymous commune in California) and there is an intentional deferral to the wind as the ultimate composer-performer here, but on the label there is a tiny writing credit listed to "Harry Bee". The packaging pours on the hippie/new age imagery, with several verses of poetry, elemental track titles, and a 22"x33" foldout poster. "she curled up in my lap / to listen to the wind / singing forth the dawn / daddy / who makes that song?..."

This album compares to the best of other sound sculpture art like Sonambient, Harry Bertoia, Max Neuhaus, Harry Partch, Z'ev, Donald Knaack, Bernard and Francois Baschet, Structures Sonores, Jacques Lasry, Paul Panhuysen, Bill Fontana, Mario Bertoncini, Alvin Lucier, Bruce Nauman, Robert Rutman, Skip LaPlante, Jean Tinguely, Michael Brewster, Henry Cowell, Alan Lamb, Julian Carrillo, Cromometrofonia, etc. Check out my other auctions this week for more avant garde/experimental, early electronic/electroacoustic/synthesizer, jazz/improv, 20th century classical, microtonal, minimalist, audiophile, and sound art records.
