Description

The Wizard - Ultra Rare Promo 7" 45rpm vinyl single - Marc Bolan - 1965 F.12288
This is a rare find and is in G+ to VG condition. There are clear scratches as I have tried to show on the photos but none of these create clicks. There is surface noise througout but does not overpower the music and is more noticeable on the run in and generally a little louder on the A side than the B side. The record is an enjoyable listen on good equipment and plays through without skips or jumps to the end on both sides.
Any questions, please let me know. Offers welcome and record priced as such.
Record will be packaged securely and sent first class special delivery with full insurance.
Many thanks for looking and here is some more information about the record.

Extract from 'Bolan World'

November 19th 1965 The Wizard / Beyond The Rising Sun (Decca F122288) is released.

Bolans first single.produced by Jim Economides with music director Mike Leander. Recorded at Decca Studios Broadhurst Gardens West Hampstead London.

Despite Jim Economides getting the production credit here, Mike Hurst claims it was he who ran the session – he was working for / with Economides at the time. Several sources also point to the fact that Economides was in the UK ‘hiding’ from ‘the mob’ to whom he owed money. He’d claimed he’d been a producer in California – in fact he’d only been a studio engineer, but (like Shel Talmy) convinced UK record companies that he was more than he really was.

The session was over in two hours. Leander had a small a small backing orchestra at his disposa, complete with string section and the backing group, “The Ladybirds” were also on hand. Three songs were recorded ‘The Wizard’, ‘Beyond the Risin’ Sun’ and ‘That’s the Bag I’m In’. The first two were chosen for Marc’s debut single.

Some of the single reviews below:

“… it has a most intriguing lyric and his Sonny Bono-like voice is offset by a solid thumping beat and ethereal voices…” – Derek Johnson NME

“It’s a very raw sound like Barry McGuire which is a bit too raucous for the hit parade. It doesn’t do anything for me.” – Judith Durham (The Seekers)

Melody Maker “On the strength of this strange young man’s looks and weird background I suspect we’ll hear more of this odd record… I prefer the other side ‘Beyond The Rising Sun’ which has more tune.

“Does lovely things on this. I’m a bit put off by the way this boy sings with Dylan phrasing but that’s all.” – Disc
