If you are looking at this auction you almost doubtless already know that in 1957, future legend Scott LaFaro recorded a session with a rising young Ohio-area jazz pianist Helen Mudgett, stage name Pat Moran.

As explained by Marc Meyers’ JazzWax:

By now, you probably know that bassist Scott LaFaro was a member of the Bill Evans Trio from 1959 to 1961 and that he died in an auto accident in July 1961. But before LaFaro's association with Evans, he was a working musician in New York and then in Los Angeles. Just before his trip West in 1957, La Faro recorded his first trio album—This Is Pat Moran (Audio Fidelity)—with Moran on piano and Gene Gammage on drums. The album also was issued as The Legendary Scott LaFaro by the label in 1958, one assumes to capitalize on both fan bases.

As Moran's playing demonstrates on this album, she had a graceful, assertive style and a keen, bebop sensibility in '57. In addition to recording This Is Pat Moran, the trio recorded Beverly Kelly Sings with the Pat Moran Trio at around the same time.

Who is Pat Moran? Born Helen Mudgett in 1934 in Enid, Okla., Moran studied piano at Phillips University in her hometown and then at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. She started as a concert pianist but switched to jazz, forming a quartet. She also recorded with Mel Torme, Oscar Pettiford and Terry Gibbs.

This LP was hidden among 1,199 other recently-donated LPs when a sharp-eyed library volunteer put it aside because he already knew that Pat Moran was one of the great “whatever happened to?” stories of the bebop era.

This same semi-jazz-savvy library volunteer was also dimly aware that the credits for the early version of this LP were erroneous, for whatever reason. Multiple sources confirm that the bass player on this LP was not Moran’s usual trio partner John Doling, but rather the just-passing-through Scott LaFaro.

The exact same master tapes were later used to put out The Legendary Scott LaFaro, and one can only wonder what people who bought both LPs thought.

This is a very early (recorded 1957) stereo indy-label small-group (mostly or kindasorta) bebop recording, and there is far more verbiage in the gatefold package explaining what stereo is than about the musicians themselves. While this music is often available on YouTube, YouTube is a case of, you get what you pay for.

This is an unquestionably original LP more than 55 years old in the rare STEREO pressing, and in excellent shape overall for its age. The dead-wax scribes appear to indicate that this was pressed from the second set of stampers, A2/B2. But for all we know, the first stampers might have been rejected. This appears to be an early pressing but that is only an educated guess and not a guarantee.

Condition Notes:

The donated collection that this is one of the “picks of the litter” of had a high percentage of multiple copies (up to four of the same LP) of favorite LPs, many alternate copies still sealed. Many of the opened LPs showed almost no sign of wear. E.g., the Keith Jarrett Bremen-Lausanne set showed wear only on the third LP; the others might not have ever been listened to.

By visual inspection only, the vinyl here is overall Excellent and still shiny. There is one small needle-drop mark on one side and some very small signs of paper dust and handling. The vinyl is shiny and will clean up very well with washing. The jacket is VG+. It is let down only by a very small drill mark, as shown, and some very slight de-lamination of the cover plastic overlay.
