I think one great line of vinyl collecting is when initial issues of LP covers are changed due to complaints from record company executives, from censors, or from the buying public.
Remember the Beatles “Butcher Cover” and the Mamas & Papas “Toilet” Cover? Or how about the Dave Clark Five “No-Instruments” Cover or Blind Faith’s “Topless Girl” Cover? And don’t forget Three Dog Night’s “Birthing” Cover and Roxy Music’s “Naked Ladies” cover. Replacement covers were issued for all of these original covers.
THERE ARE 2 LPs IN THIS AUCTION:
LP#1
· “IT AIN’T EASY” by Three Dog Night
· This LP is Dunhill Records DS – 500078.
· It is a STEREO LP
· This LP was issued in 1970.
· The LP in this auction is the RARE ORIGINAL COVER (known as “THE NUDE BAND MEMBERS COVER”) that has the band members seated and they appear to be nude. In fact, they were NOT nude at all. (NOTE: As you can see, there is NO visible (no frontal or rear) nudity that would cause this cover to be considered to be adult material. (One sees more nudity in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, in Maxim magazine, or in a Victoria’s Secret catalog!)
· Wikipedia states that this LP’s original working title was “The Wizards of Orange”. The band members donned orange makeup and orange body stockings as if they were posing in the nude (but they weren’t nude at all) for the cover image. However, ABC/Dunhill Records rejected the cover as inappropriate after initial copies were shipped out.
· Three Dog Night has the distinction of having not one but two of their original LP covers withdrawn. The second was the original cover of their Hard Labor LP (known as “The Birthing Cover”) with a creature in stirrups on a medical examining table giving birth to a vinyl record. The reissued cover for that LP has a large band-aid covering the creature giving birth to the vinyl LP.
· The GATEFOLD COVER is in STRONG VG to VG+ CONDITION. There is light to moderate overall wear on the front and rear slicks. Most wear is on the corners and edges and base of the spine. The LP has corner wear on 3 corners. There is light to moderate wear on the edges and seams, but NO SEAM SPLITS.
· The VINYL is in NEAR MINT CONDITION.
· Of course, the value of this LP is primarily in the cover.
This is a GREAT HARD-TO-FIND LP COVER these days. It’s a “Must Have” for any vintage vinyl collection and definitely SUITABLE FOR FRAMING (coincidentally, the title of another Three Dog Night LP)!!!

· “IT AIN’T EASY” by Three Dog Night
· This LP is Dunhill Records DS – 500078.
· This LP was issued in 1970.
· This is the SECOND or REPLACEMENT COVER issued for this LP.
· This is a PROMOTIONAL PRESSING.
· As you may know, PROMOTIONAL LPs such as the one in this auction were issued in very limited quantities and only made available for promotional purposes to DJs at the Radio Stations for on-air play. They were NOT made available to the general public, so they are VERY DESIRABLE due to their rarity (limited quantities produced and not released for sale to the public).
· The GATEFOLD COVER is in VG+ CONDITION. There is light to moderate overall wear on the front and rear slicks. Most wear is on the corners and edges. There are a couple of light partial creases on the rear cover. There are NO SEAM SPLITS. There is a white “PROMOTIONAL COPY NOT FOR SALE” sticker on the front cover.
· The VINYL is in STRONG VG+ CONDITION with some light surface hairlines/scuffs. The white promotional labels are clean and snowy white! The labels, like the cover, have “PROMOTION COPY NOT FOR SALE” printed on them.
A nice set of Three Dog Night “IT AIN’T EASY” LPs for someone’s vinyl collection!
FYI: I use Goldmine Grading Standards (G for Good, VG for Very Good, VG+ for Very Good Plus, NM for Near Mint, M for Mint) to VISUALLY grade these LPs, so please know the descriptions of these grades before bidding.
